London Faces E-Bike Parking Crunch: Lime Report Calls for More Bays and Repurposed Road Space

London’s booming e-bike scene is facing a growing challenge: a lack of dedicated parking spaces. A new report by Lime, a micromobility company, highlights this issue and proposes solutions to ensure the continued success of shared e-bikes in the city.

The report, titled “Changing Spaces: How to solve London’s shared e-bike parking challenge,” reveals a significant gap between demand and available parking. Lime estimates that Londoners miss out on a staggering 30,000 potential e-bike trips every day, translating to 10 million missed trips annually. This shortfall is attributed to insufficient parking, particularly in key areas like commercial centers, transport hubs, and high streets.

The report builds on previous research advocating for increased e-bike parking infrastructure. It references a 2023 study recommending the creation of 25 parking locations per square kilometer and 10,000 new shared e-bike parking spaces across London.

Lime’s report proposes a multi-pronged approach to address the parking shortage. It calls for collaboration between Lime and London boroughs to:

• Plan and implement new parking locations strategically placed to meet demand.
• Reallocate road space currently occupied by private cars for dedicated e-bike parking.
• Establish a consistent density of parking spaces across the city.

Demonstrating their commitment, Lime has pledged £1 million to a dedicated London parking fund. This fund will be used to:

• Share data to support the planning and installation of new on-carriageway parking bays and cycle stands.
• Increase the overall parking density throughout London.

The report also emphasizes the importance of clear communication with riders. It suggests that shared e-bike operators, including Lime, should establish unambiguous parking terminology to avoid confusion. Additionally, it proposes the creation of designated parking zones with varying levels of flexibility depending on the borough’s location.

Lime is leading by example with a creative initiative. They partnered with 3D street art specialists to create an “optical illusion” installation. This eye-catching display transformed a non-compliant car into a vision of green space and e-bike parking, prompting Londoners to rethink how public spaces can be utilized.
