Bafang H730: The Automatic Shifting Hub Motor Built for City E-Bikes

Shifting gears in city traffic can be a hassle. Bafang wants to change that. Their new H730 hub motor uses patented GVT (Gear Variable Transmission) technology to take care of shifting for you β€” automatically.

This is no ordinary e-bike motor. It blends the benefits of an internally geared hub with the smooth power of Bafang’s own hub motors. The result? A clean, compact system with fewer parts to fuss over.

We first saw GVT back in 2022 with the two-speed H700 motor. Now, the H730 takes things further. It packs a three-speed automatic gearbox that shifts based on your speed. You don’t touch a shifter. You don’t think about gears. It just happens.

Why does that matter? For starters, fewer parts mean less maintenance. No derailleur. No cables. No external shifters. The rear end of the bike stays sleek and uncluttered. Plus, the gears are sealed inside, safe from rain, mud, and road grime.

The H730’s 250W motor comes with a torque sensor and smart controller. They read your pedal effort in real time. Acceleration is quick and smooth. Pedal lag is gone. It tops out at 25 km/h (15.5 mph) to meet EU rules, but a faster 20 mph version for North America would make perfect sense.

Bafang also designed the H730 to work with belt drives and minimalist e-bike frames. That opens the door for more stylish, low-maintenance commuter bikes.

And they’re thinking big. Since GVT launched, more than 40 e-bike brands β€” from city commuters to cargo haulers β€” have used it. Bafang sees the H730 powering shared-bike fleets, folding bikes, and long-life urban rides.

In short: fewer moving parts, smarter shifting, and a ride that just works. No fuss. No thinking. Just you, your bike, and the city.
