Talaria MX5 Sting Pro: First Major Battery Fire in the U.S.

Just a week after its launch in the U.S., the Talaria MX5 Sting Pro electric dirt bike is making headlines for an unfortunate reason: it’s the first documented case of a significant battery fire involving a Talaria model.

Official Statements from Luna Cycle

Videos circulating on social media depict the Talaria MX5 engulfed in flames, with the rider explaining he had only ridden the bike for 20 miles (32 km) before it caught fire beneath him. The incident was confirmed by Eric Hicks, founder and owner of Luna Cycle, the primary U.S. supplier of Talaria and other light electric dirt bikes, known for introducing Talaria models and previously distributing Sur Ron products.

Clarifying Battery Sources

Luna Cycle stated, “This is the first major Talaria fire of any model reported in the USA. We take this very seriously and plan to address this concern with the utmost priority.” Hicks noted that Talaria typically uses batteries from Greenway Batteries, a well-respected manufacturer supplying numerous electric bike brands.

Investigating the Cause

Greenway has been the main supplier for Talaria and Sur Ron for years, with Luna Cycle serving as both distributor and authorized repair center for Greenway Batteries for the past eight years. Hicks emphasized that in this time, no Greenway battery had ever caused a fire, contributing to the safety reputation of Talaria and Sur Ron products.

However, due to a “clerical error” within Talaria, some MX5 bikes shipped to the U.S. were equipped with batteries from another supplier, Scud. “After investigating the incident, Luna confirmed that the MX5 involved in the fire had a Scud battery,” Hicks explained. He refrained from speculating on the cause of the fire, stressing that it is unacceptable for both Luna and its customers.

Steps for Remediation

In light of the incident, Luna Cycle has announced several measures to address concerns over the Scud batteries. They will replace batteries in any affected Talaria MX5 bikes and have canceled or reversed shipments of orders currently in process that contain Scud batteries. These bikes will be fitted with new Greenway batteries and shipped within days.

While not all Talaria MX5 Sting Pro bikes dispatched from Luna Cycle in the past week contained Scud batteries, those customers who did receive one will be contacted directly for a battery replacement.

Context in the E-Bike Industry

Although lithium-ion battery fires are known in the electric bicycle sector, they remain relatively rare in the U.S., especially among the millions of e-bikes on the road. Such incidents are even less common with premium models like the Talaria MX5. Most documented battery fires in the U.S. are linked to lower-quality batteries in budget e-bikes.

As a response to safety concerns, several cities and institutions are beginning to enforce regulations that require safety certifications, such as UL compliance, for micromobility vehicles featuring lithium-ion batteries, reflecting a growing emphasis on safety within the industry.

Conclusion

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of battery safety in the rapidly evolving electric bike market. As the industry adapts, consumers should remain informed and vigilant about the products they choose.
