Amazon Signs Deal to Use Rivian-backed ALSO Pedal-Powered Delivery Vans in Cities
Last Updated on October 23, 2025 by Kristina
Amazon has signed a multi-year deal with ALSO โ the new micromobility startup spun out of Rivian โ to use its four-wheel pedal-assist cargo quads for urban deliveries. The vehicles, called TM-Q, are narrow, bike-lane-legal delivery platforms designed for dense cities.
Amazon plans to roll out thousands of these cargo quads across more than 70 micromobility hubs in the U.S. and Europe. The program is meant to reduce emissions and cut congestion in areas where traditional delivery vans struggle to move or park. ALSO says the TM-Q will launch in spring 2026.
The TM-Q combines pedal power with electric assist and carries a payload of over 400 pounds. The four-wheel layout gives more stability and cargo volume than a two-wheel e-bike, while still fitting into bike lanes and side streets that vans cannot access.
This initiative sits alongside Amazonโs larger electric van program with Rivian, not in place of it. The company is layering micromobility into its last-mile network for the zones where vans are slow, costly, and inefficient.
ALSO is building both commercial and consumer versions of its platforms. The consumer line is pitched as a car alternative for daily errands, while the commercial TM-Q is focused on short-range logistics with frequent stops.
If the rollout meets expectations, cargo quads could become a standard tool for last-mile delivery in crowded cities โ for Amazon and for any operator facing the same urban constraints.
My take
This deal may look small compared to electric vans, but it could have bigger day-to-day impact inside cities. Replacing even a share of van miles with pedal-assist cargo quads means fewer idling engines, less lane blocking, and quieter streets.
The economics will decide whether it scales: uptime in winter, rider safety in mixed traffic, and cost per stop versus diesel or full-size EV vans. If Amazon can prove those numbers work, the copy-cats will follow.
The bigger story is cultural: e-bikes are graduating from personal transport to commercial infrastructure. When freight switches to pedals with assist, that is not a lifestyle trend โ that is a structural change.
