With electric bikes becoming more popular, there’s been a surge in cheap e-bikes from brands like Vivi, Ancheer, and Swagtron. Many of them are sold on Amazon for under $800. But are they actually worth your money?
I bought one — a Vivi e-bike — to find out.
Why Are Some E-Bikes So Inexpensive?
Affordable e-bikes typically cut costs in areas like:
- Battery capacity and cell quality
- Motor brand and controller
- Suspension, brakes, and frame materials
- Assembly and packaging
That doesn’t automatically mean they’re bad — but it does mean they’re not built for heavy daily use or high performance.

I ordered a Vivi 26” city-style electric bike on Amazon for just under $700.

First Impressions
Out of the box, it was surprisingly well-packed. Assembly took about 45 minutes. The brakes were already aligned, and the components felt solid for the price.
No missing parts, no damage, no error codes. It was ready to ride.

Real-World Performance: Vivi E-Bike Test Ride
Ride Quality
The ride is smooth. It handles well on pavement and packed dirt. The front fork provides just enough cushion for urban roads.
Braking
The mechanical disc brakes are average but reliable. Stopping power is decent — especially for light to moderate riding.
Pedal Assist and Throttle
Here’s where I noticed some quirks:
- Throttle: Works well overall but sometimes takes a second to respond.
- Pedal Assist: Occasionally lags or surges — it doesn’t feel as seamless as higher-end systems.
It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s noticeable, especially when starting from a stop.
Battery Range
I haven’t ridden it far enough to confirm the full claimed range (up to 40 miles), but short to moderate trips (5–8 miles) have been consistent with no battery issues so far.
Have I Had Any Problems?
Not yet. I haven’t had any mechanical or electrical issues in the few months I’ve owned it. That said, I only ride it occasionally — a few miles at a time — so it hasn’t been heavily tested.
I do recommend checking bolts and connections regularly. Like many budget e-bikes, it’s smart to inspect things like brakes and tire pressure before every ride.
Who Is a Cheap E-Bike Like Vivi Good For?
Cheap e-bikes can be a smart buy for the right person. A Vivi might be a good fit if:
- You ride casually (less than 10 miles per trip)
- You’re sticking to paved roads or bike paths
- You’re okay with occasional quirks (like assist lag)
- You’re on a budget and want to try e-biking without a huge investment
It’s also great as a secondary bike or for light commuting.

Final Verdict: Are Cheap E-Bikes Worth It?
Yes — if your expectations are realistic. The Vivi e-bike exceeded mine for a sub-$700 bike. It rides well, looks good, and hasn’t given me any major trouble.
But it’s not perfect. Don’t expect premium features, perfect pedal assist tuning, or long-term durability like a $2,000+ e-bike.
Still, for casual riders or budget-conscious beginners, it’s a surprisingly solid option.
