Navigate Atlanta Without a Car: Your Guide to Lime and Bird E-Bike Sharing Services

Are you ready to change up your commute and leave your car behind? Atlanta offers several options to make car-free travel a reality, including shared e-scooters and e-bikes! Currently, Lime and Bird are the two permitted operators for dockless electric devices throughout the city. You’ve probably seen these vehicles parked along Midtown sidewalks or cruising the Eastside BeltLine. Lime offers shared e-scooters, e-bikes, and soon, seated electric scooters. Bird provides shared e-scooters. Both companies have user-friendly apps for renting these devices, allowing you to end your trip anywhere within Atlanta.

There are regulations to follow when riding these devices. For instance, they cannot be used from 12am to 4am, and there are speed limits on the BeltLine path. Riders are required to use bike lanes or streets, avoiding sidewalks. For route planning, Midtown Transportation can provide customized suggestions.

Proper parking etiquette is crucial for dockless devices from Lime and Bird. They should not obstruct sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, or bus stops. If you encounter improperly parked devices, report them to Atlanta 311 for correction. To enhance compliance, ATLDOT plans to pilot designated parking areas in high-usage zones.

Interested in owning your own e-bike? The Atlanta Regional Commission, in collaboration with the City and Propel ATL, will launch an e-bike rebate program in Spring 2024. Funded by a $1 million investment, this initiative aims to promote e-bike ownership, reduce transportation costs, and decrease solo car trips. City residents can apply for rebates, with income-qualified applicants eligible for up to $2,000. Rebates are applied upfront at local bike shops, simplifying the purchasing process.

Atlanta previously operated a docked bike share system, Relay Bikes, until late 2022. ATLDOT is exploring new bike share models to complement dockless options across the city.
