Bosch Unveils Cutting-Edge E-Bike Motor and High-Capacity Batteries

Bosch has long been a frontrunner in the premium electric bicycle drivetrain market, and now the company aims to strengthen its position with the launch of a range of innovative products. Electric mountain bikes (eMTBs), a cornerstone of Bosch’s e-bike expertise, are set to gain the most from these advancements, featuring a new motor and larger battery options.

Traditionally, motors reduce power output as they heat up to avoid overheating, but Bosch claims the new system delivers even more reliable performance during extended use.
The motor features redesigned sensors that enhance its responsiveness to rider input. In addition to new torque and cadence sensors, the system incorporates inertial sensors that measure acceleration and rotation across three axes. This allows the motor to adapt its performance based on the rider’s terrain—whether climbing, descending, or navigating rocky trails. The result is a more intuitive riding experience, with the motor providing tailored support based on the conditions.
Bosch has also worked to reduce noise levels produced by the motor, particularly focusing on high-frequency sounds that are often most noticeable. The updated Performance Line CX introduces a smart walk assist feature, allowing riders to walk up steep grades with just a press of a button. The system intelligently adjusts the walk assist speed based on the incline and ground conditions, while a hill hold feature provides enough power to keep the eMTB stationary for 10 seconds after releasing the walk assist button.
Additionally, the hill start assist feature offers a burst of power to help riders maintain balance and speed on steep inclines, making it easier to transition from a stopped position to riding.

Flow Smartphone App for Customization
Bosch’s new Flow smartphone app allows riders to customize four key performance variables of the motor: maximum speed, maximum torque, assistance ratio (the relationship between rider input and motor output), and dynamics (the responsiveness of the motor). By adjusting these settings, riders can optimize their e-bike experience, choosing between maximum power and efficiency based on their needs.
Purion 400 Display
Complementing the advanced motor technology is Bosch’s new Purion 400 display, a high-resolution color display that mounts conveniently just right of the stem, providing protection from potential damage during rides. This display offers riders an easy way to track essential data such as speed, distance, and battery status. It is also compatible with Bosch’s LED Remote and Mini Remote, ensuring seamless integration and operation.
Bigger, Lighter Batteries
As part of this new release, Bosch introduces two new PowerTube batteries: the PowerTube 800 and the PowerTube 600, with capacities of 800Wh and 600Wh, respectively. Rather than sourcing cells from external manufacturers, Bosch has designed new cells, electronics, and aluminum housings for these batteries. The PowerTube 800, weighing 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs.), is Bosch’s most energy-dense battery yet, offering a 20% improvement in energy density compared to its predecessor.
Both the PowerTube 800 and 600 share the same dimensions and interface, allowing riders to switch between the two based on their preferences for weight and power. This flexibility is also beneficial for manufacturers looking to manage costs while maintaining performance.
In addition, the new batteries utilize recycled materials, enhancing their sustainability. Notably, the PowerTube 800 can charge 2.5 times faster than previous models, thanks to the adoption of a new industry charging standard called Charge2Bike.
Advanced Features with eShift and ABS Pro
Another core feature of the new Performance Line CX is eShift, which supports automatic electronic shifting with Shimano’s Di2 and Cues systems, in addition to existing options like the Eviolo Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This enhancement aims to provide riders with a smoother and more efficient shifting experience.
Bosch has also introduced ABS Pro, which adds anti-lock braking functionality to the eMTB experience. This system prevents front wheel lockup during hard braking, allowing riders to brake later and with greater confidence. With new sensors, the ABS Pro system reacts more quickly and precisely, offering two modes of operation: Trail Pro and Race. Trail Pro helps manage wheel lift during braking, while Race mode focuses solely on preventing overbraking without controlling for wheel lift.
