City of Boulder Offers E-Bike Vouchers to Income-Qualified Residents

In a move set to promote sustainability and make eco-friendly transportation more accessible, the City of Boulder is rolling out a new e-bike voucher program this September. This initiative, launching on September 16, aims to assist income-qualified residents in purchasing electric bikes, thereby supporting the city’s climate goals and enhancing community mobility.

Registration Details

The registration for this limited-time program will open on Monday, September 16, at 9 a.m. and will remain accessible until Monday, September 30, at 11 a.m. Interested residents can sign up through the program’s webpage. Eligibility requires participants to be at or below 80% of the area median income for Boulder County.

Applicants will receive an email by September 30 at 5 p.m. from [email protected], indicating whether they have been selected for a voucher, waitlisted, or not selected. Those selected will have 96 hours to provide proof of city residence and income. Once approved, they will receive a voucher with a 45-day validity period.

Voucher Details

The 2024 e-bike vouchers offer substantial discounts, with amounts varying based on the type of e-bike. Regular e-bikes qualify for up to $2,100 in discounts, while e-cargo bikes and adaptive e-bikes are eligible for up to $2,700. To encourage safe and frequent use, recipients will also receive a $200 Starter Kit voucher for essential bike equipment like helmets, child seats, and locks.

Jonathan Koehn, Climate Initiatives Director, emphasized the program’s role in addressing community needs: “We have seen a clear community need to offer targeted assistance for those who may find it difficult to purchase an e-bike without a discount. This program is one way we prioritize income equity as part of our climate actions, while also helping to improve air quality and community health through reduced vehicle pollution.”

Supporting Local Businesses and Sustainability

To support local businesses, vouchers will be valid only at participating bike shops within Boulder County and cannot be used for online purchases. A list of participating shops will be available on the city’s webpage soon. The e-bike incentives are funded by the city’s Climate Tax and supported by a partnership with the nonprofit Community Cycles.

Interim Director of Transportation and Mobility, Valerie Watson, added, “We hope to better meet the individual transportation needs of our community with sustainable, convenient travel options, including by supporting community members making first- and last-mile connections to and from their destination.”
