Warning Issued: Generic E-Bike Chargers Could Pose Serious Fire Risks

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a critical warning to e-bike users regarding the use of generic “universal” chargers. According to the CPSC, these chargers, often marketed as compatible with various micromobility devices, may not be safe for your specific e-bike model. The Commission cautions that while these chargers might physically connect to your device, they might still be incompatible, posing significant risks.

The CPSC’s advisory highlights that each e-bike battery has unique charging requirements that necessitate using a charger designed specifically for that battery. Chargers labeled as “suitable for e-bikes” or those claiming compatibility with specific brands might still be hazardous. Using the wrong charger can lead to overheating, potentially causing the battery to catch fire and resulting in severe damage or injury.

From January 1, 2023, to May 16, 2024, the CPSC received 156 reports of fires and thermal incidents linked to generic chargers for micromobility products. These incidents include significant property damage and serious injuries. On September 5, 2024, the CPSC issued a public warning about the fire hazards associated with certain models of these chargers.

To ensure safety, the Commission advises users to always use the charger provided with their e-bike. If a replacement charger is needed, users should contact the e-bike manufacturer for recommendations on compatible options. Additionally, to prevent fire hazards, the CPSC recommends unplugging the charger once the device is fully charged, avoiding prolonged charging periods, and never leaving the charger plugged in while unattended or overnight.

Stay safe and protect your property by following these guidelines and using only the correct charger for your e-bike.
