Two E-bike Crashes in Three Days Shake Glens Falls

Local authorities are reporting a concerning uptick in e-bike accidents within the city, with two serious incidents occurring just three days apart.

The first collision took place on Tuesday, July 23rd, at the intersection of Bay and Sanford Streets. According to the Glens Falls Police Department, an e-bike rider ran a red light, colliding with an SUV. The e-bike operator sustained severe injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

Just two days later, on Thursday, July 25th, another e-bike accident occurred at the intersection of Bay and Grand Streets. Similar to the previous incident, the e-bike rider failed to yield at a red light, resulting in a collision with an SUV. The rider was treated for their injuries at Glens Falls Hospital and released.

In both cases, the e-bike operators were issued traffic citations for disregarding traffic signals.

Local law enforcement is urging both motorists and e-bike riders to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws to prevent future accidents.

E-bike Safety Tips

To avoid accidents, e-bike riders should:

  • Wear a helmet: Helmets are crucial for protecting your head in case of a fall.
  • Obey traffic laws: Ride in designated bike lanes or on the road, following traffic signals and signs.
  • Be visible: Wear bright clothing and use lights, especially at night.
  • Maintain a safe distance: Keep a safe distance from cars and pedestrians.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Scan the road ahead for potential hazards.

Addressing the Issue

In response to these incidents, the city of Glens Falls is considering several initiatives to improve e-bike safety:

  • Enhanced bike lane infrastructure: Expanding and improving bike lanes to provide safer routes for e-bike riders.
  • Public awareness campaigns: Educating the public about e-bike safety through informational materials and outreach programs.
  • Increased law enforcement presence: Enforcing traffic laws to deter reckless behavior.

By implementing these measures, the city aims to create a safer environment for both e-bike riders and motorists.
