France Goes Big on E-Bikes: Up to €4,000 Subsidy to Ditch Your Car (US Can Take Notes!)

Last Updated on June 20, 2024 by Kristina Grant

France is taking a significant step towards becoming a cycling nation by offering substantial subsidies to residents who trade in their gas-powered cars for electric bikes (e-bikes). According to The Times, the government has increased the subsidy amount to a maximum of €4,000 (approximately $3,976) per person.

This program targets individuals who live in low-income households within low-emission urban zones. They can receive the full €4,000 to purchase an e-bike, with the option to include traditional bicycles as well. Residents with higher incomes are still eligible but will receive a reduced subsidy based on their income bracket.

The initiative builds upon a program introduced last year. This increase reflects the government’s desire to catch up to European cycling leaders like the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. France aims to have 9% of its population cycling by 2024, a significant jump from the current 3%. In comparison, the Netherlands boasts a cycling rate of 27%.

This program draws inspiration from Lithuania’s successful scheme. There, citizens can receive up to €1,000 (nearly $994) to purchase a new e-bike, scooter, motorcycle, or even opt for public transportation credits after trading in their older vehicles.

France’s commitment goes beyond individual incentives. President Emmanuel Macron’s administration has pledged €250 million to transform Paris into a fully bikeable city. Additionally, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, re-elected last year on a pro-cycling platform, plans to add over 80 miles of new, secure bike paths within the next five years.

This news arrives shortly after the signing of a major tax and climate bill by US President Joe Biden. While the bill allocates significant resources for electric vehicle tax credits, it lacks any specific incentives for e-bikes, a potentially powerful tool in the fight against climate change.
