Baltimore Launches E-Bike Voucher Program to Help Residents Go Green
Baltimore City has launched an electric bicycle voucher program aimed at helping residents save money on the purchase of e-bikes. This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for those looking to invest in eco-friendly transportation.
Eligible residents who are selected after applying could receive vouchers worth up to $2,000 for their new electric bike.
“E-bikes are all about accessibility for everyone,” stated Jed Weeks, Executive Director of Bikemore.
A total of $75,000 has been allocated for this program, which will award approximately 50 vouchers, with around half designated for low-income residents. “Any city resident can apply for a voucher of up to $750, and those who meet income eligibility criteria can apply for a voucher of up to $2,000,” Weeks explained.
The Baltimore City Department of Transportation is currently accepting applications for this e-bike voucher pilot program. For more information and to apply, you can visit their official website.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Transportation
This program is designed to make cycling a more affordable and environmentally friendly transportation option. “It just makes biking a little bit easier,” Weeks added.
Bikemore, an organization focused on enhancing walking, biking, and public transit accessibility in the city, played a crucial role in launching the initiative. “Councilman Ryan Dorsey and Bikemore have long advocated for an e-bike rebate or voucher program in Baltimore City, and this year, the mayor committed to including it in the city budget,” Weeks noted.
High Demand for Vouchers
The e-bike voucher program has already gained significant traction, with the Baltimore Department of Transportation reporting that it received hundreds of applications in less than an hour after the application portal opened on Tuesday.
Baltimore resident Velvet James expressed her excitement about the program, stating, “I think that’s awesome. It’s a blessing if it can help somebody.” Many locals, including those living near the bike lane on Maryland Avenue, are considering applying for the vouchers. “I could use one if I’m eligible for one,” James said. “It would help me out a lot.”
