Exploring CargoB: Boston’s Innovative Cargo Bikeshare
During a recent family vacation in Boston, Clarence Eckerson, producer of Streetfilms, had the opportunity to test CargoB, a new bikesharing service offering electric pedal-assist cargo bikes.
CargoB has stationed its Urban Arrow bikes in several key areas, including Jamaica Plain, Winter Hill in Somerville, and near Porter Square in Cambridge, with plans for additional locations and bikes in the near future.
According to Dorothy Fennell, one of CargoB’s co-founders, the service aims to complement the existing Bluebikes system by providing bikes capable of carrying larger loads—perfect for grocery runs, trips to the hardware store, or picking up kids from school.
To rent a bike, users simply download the CargoB app from the Apple or Google Play stores, create an account, and check the availability of bikes nearby.
Rental rates are competitive, matching the non-member prices for electric Bluebikes at 25 cents per minute or $15 per hour.
“We’ve seen customers using our bikes for a variety of purposes, from buying barbecue grills to transporting air conditioning units. People take their dogs to the park, run errands, and even pick up items from Facebook Marketplace,” Fennell shared.
With summer approaching, CargoB plans to be active at local events, inviting the community to test ride their bikes. “Come take a test ride and kick the tires!” she encouraged.
