NYC Expands Citi Bike E-Bike Charging Stations for Bike Month
In celebration of Bike Month, the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) and Lyft are ramping up support for electric bike riders. Together, they’re expanding the city’s on-site charging infrastructure for Citi Bike e-bikes—making it easier than ever to ride electric.
This spring, 13 new charging stations will be activated across Manhattan and Brooklyn. These stations allow e-bikes to charge while docked, eliminating the need for battery swaps that require staff and gas-powered vans. The result? Better e-bike availability and fewer vehicle miles traveled.
A Smarter Way to Power Citi Bikes
Unlike traditional setups, these stations connect directly to the electric grid. That means docked e-bikes can charge on-site, automatically. The move builds on successful pilots in global cities like Montreal and Barcelona.
Lyft, which operates Citi Bike, expects the charging stations to improve service for riders while cutting operational costs tied to manual battery replacements.
Meeting Growing Demand
Citi Bike’s popularity continues to soar. In 2024 alone, riders took over 29 million e-bike trips. As of early 2025, that momentum hasn’t slowed—over 7 million e-bike rides have already been logged, including a single-day record of 130,709 rides last fall.
With over 15,000 pedal-assist e-bikes now in the fleet, keeping them charged and ready is key. These new charging stations help make that happen.
What Leaders Are Saying
NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez put it simply: “The demand for Citi Bike e-bikes has never been higher. Expanding charging stations means better access to fully charged bikes and faster service.”
From the climate perspective, Elijah Hutchinson of the Mayor’s Office for Climate & Environmental Justice called it “a common-sense approach” to help more people shift away from cars and toward cleaner, healthier transport.
Lyft’s Caroline Samponaro emphasized the user benefit: “This investment will directly improve e-bike availability for riders and expand access to sustainable travel.”
And for Con Edison, which powers the new stations, the expansion marks another step toward meeting the city’s growing appetite for clean mobility. “We’re proud to power this next phase of Citi Bike’s journey,” said Britt Reichborn-Kjennerud, Director of E-Mobility at Con Edison.
