Rad Power Bikes Battery Fire Warning – What E-Bike Riders Should Know

Last Updated on November 25, 2025 by Kristina

On November 24, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an urgent safety warning about certain Rad Power Bikes batteries. The agency says the batteries can catch fire or explode. This warning applies even if the battery is not charging or in use.

If you ride a Rad bike, this is important information.

What the CPSC Found

The CPSC published Product Safety Warning 26-118.
It tells riders to immediately stop using two battery models:

  • RP-1304
  • HL-RP-S1304

These batteries were sold with several Rad Power Bikes models.
They were also sold separately as replacement batteries.
According to the CPSC, the hazard becomes more likely when the battery or wiring harness has been exposed to water or debris.

The agency reported:

  • 31 fires linked to these batteries
  • 12 property-damage incidents totaling about $734,500
  • Some fires occurred while the bike was not being used or charged

No deaths were mentioned in the public notice, but the risk of โ€œserious injury or deathโ€ was included in the warning.

Which Rad E-Bikes Are Affected

These batteries were included with the following Rad models:

  • RadWagon 4
  • RadCity HS 4
  • RadRover High Step 5
  • RadCity Step-Thru 3
  • RadRover Step-Thru 1
  • RadRunner 1
  • RadRunner 2
  • RadRunner Plus
  • RadExpand 5

If you own any of these bikes, check your battery label right away.

How Rad Power Bikes Responded

Rad Power Bikes disagrees with the CPSCโ€™s conclusion.
The company stated that:

  • Their batteries โ€œmeet or exceed rigorous international safety standards.โ€
  • The batteries underwent independent lab testing.
  • The CPSC did not challenge those test results.
  • Not all fires reported were tied to defects, and lithium-ion batteries in general can be dangerous when damaged or misused.

Rad also said a full recall or refund program for all affected batteries could put the company out of business.
They noted that their newer Safe Shield batteries are not part of the warning.

What Riders Should Do Right Now

  1. Stop using batteries labeled RP-1304 or HL-RP-S1304.
  2. Remove the battery from your bike and store it in a safe, non-flammable area.
  3. Do not charge it, use it, or transport it in your home.
  4. Contact Rad Power Bikes for support, upgrade options, or disposal guidance.
  5. Follow all standard lithium-ion safety practices.

If your battery is not part of the warning, continue to use caution, especially around water exposure.

Buyer Guide for Rad Power Bikes Owners: What To Check and How To Stay Safe

This section helps you verify your battery and keep your e-bike as safe as possible.

1. Check Your Battery Model

Look for the printed label.
If it says RP-1304 or HL-RP-S1304, stop using it immediately.

2. Inspect for Damage

Watch for:

  • swelling
  • cracks
  • dents
  • melted areas
  • odd smells
  • loose or dirty connectors

Any damage means the battery is unsafe.

3. Keep the Battery Dry

Water increases fire risk.
Wipe moisture off the case, avoid heavy rain or deep puddles, and keep the charging port clean.

4. Charge Safely

Charge in a clear, open space.
Avoid carpet, clutter, or flammable objects.
Never charge overnight or while away from home.

5. Consider Upgrading

Radโ€™s newer Safe Shield batteries have additional safety layers.
If your bike is older, upgrading may reduce risk and extend its life.

6. Look for UL Certifications

For replacements, seek:

  • UL 2271 (battery safety)
  • UL 2849 (full e-bike electrical system safety)

These certifications mean the battery passed strict fire and electrical tests.

7. Store the Battery Correctly

Store indoors, at normal room temperature.
Keep away from sunlight and metal objects.
If storing long-term, keep at 50โ€“70 percent charge.

8. Know When To Replace

Most e-bike batteries last 3โ€“5 years.
Older batteries are more unstable and more likely to fail.

9. Contact Rad Support

They can help verify your battery, offer replacements, and guide you through safe disposal.

Why This Warning Matters

E-bikes are more popular than ever.
But with more riders on the road, battery safety is becoming a bigger issue.
Even though battery fires are rare, they can be severe.
This warning reminds us that battery care is just as important as choosing the right motor or frame size.

Better awareness helps keep riders, homes, and communities safe.

My Take

I think this situation highlights two truths.
First, battery quality and safety standards matter a lot. Riders should always know what type of battery their e-bike uses, whether itโ€™s certified, and how old it is.
Second, even a well-built e-bike battery can become dangerous when damaged, wet, or stored the wrong way. Thatโ€™s why every rider should take battery care seriously.

If you own a Rad e-bike, check your battery label now.
If you’re shopping for a new bike, make battery safety one of your top priorities.
A great ride starts with a safe battery.
