E-Bikes Under Fire: NYC Considers 15 MPH Limit

Big news for NYC e-bike riders.
In a surprise announcement, Mayor Eric Adams said he plans to set a 15 mph speed limit on e-bikes and other micromobility vehicles. The goal? Improve public safety on the city’s busy streets.
Adams dropped the news during a live interview with News 4—just minutes before the first Democratic primary debate. (He skipped the debate, by the way. He’s running as an Independent this year.)
“We’re going to lower the speed limit on those who are using pedal-assist scooters, all these different vehicles that have been in bike lanes and on our streets,” Adams said. “We’re going to lower the speed limit to 15 mph, because that’s what safety is all about.”
This comes after reports of a growing crackdown on cyclists in all five boroughs.
For many riders, especially delivery workers and commuters, this move could mean major changes. It’s not yet clear how the city will enforce the new limit—or when it might take effect.
One thing’s certain: this proposal is going to stir up a lot of conversation in NYC’s e-bike community.
And just to add a little political spice: when asked who he’s voting for in the Democratic primary, Adams kept it simple—“myself.”
