Ride1Up Roadster V3 Ebike Review

Last Updated on September 21, 2024 by Kristina Grant

The Ride1Up Roadster V3 is a lightweight, efficient, and affordable city electric bike with a minimalist design. It’s a great choice for riders who are looking for a comfortable and easy-to-ride ebike for commuting or cruising around town.

Pros:

  • Lightweight: At just 39 lbs (17.7 kg), the Roadster V3 is one of the lightest ebikes on the market. This makes it easy to maneuver and carry upstairs or onto public transportation.
  • Two drivetrain options: You can choose between a carbon belt drive or a 10-speed Shimano Deore chain drive. The belt drive is maintenance-free and quiet, while the chain drive gives you more gear options for climbing hills.
  • Torque sensor: The Roadster V3 uses a torque sensor to provide a natural and responsive riding experience. The torque sensor detects how hard you’re pedaling and provides electric assist accordingly.
  • Hand throttle: The Roadster V3 also includes a hand throttle, which allows you to operate the motor without pedaling. This is a great feature for riders who want to take a break from pedaling or who need a little extra boost to get up hills.
  • Class 3 ebike: The Roadster V3 is a Class 3 ebike, which means it can reach speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h) on pedal assist.
  • Long range: The Roadster V3 has a range of 20-40 miles (32-64 km) on a single charge. You can also add a second battery to extend the range to up to 68 miles (109 km).
  • Hydraulic disc brakes: The Roadster V3 is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes, which provide excellent stopping power in all weather conditions.
  • Comfortable ride: The Roadster V3 has a comfortable geometry and wide Schwalbe G-One RS tires that provide a smooth ride.
  • Affordable: The Roadster V3 is priced at just $1,295, making it one of the most affordable ebikes on the market with these features.

Cons:

  • Stiff ride: The Roadster V3 has a stiff frame and fork, which can make for a rough ride on bumpy roads.
  • No brake light: The taillight on the Roadster V3 is not a brake light.
  • No fenders: The fenders are sold separately.

Riding Experience and Performance

While the Roadster V3 offers a responsive and agile ride, the stiff frame and fork can make for a less comfortable experience on rougher roads. The bike’s handling is particularly impressive, with precise steering and confident cornering, thanks to its rigid frame and fork.

The torque sensor technology seamlessly integrates pedal power and electric assist. This results in a natural and intuitive riding experience, making adjusting your speed and effort easy. The MIVICE hub motor provides ample power for city riding, even on hills, and the Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain offers a wide range of gears to suit different riding conditions.

Range and Battery Life

The Roadster V3’s 360Wh battery provides a respectable range of 20-40 miles. However, real-world range can vary depending on factors such as riding conditions, rider weight, and pedal assist level. The bike’s efficiency is commendable, particularly in Eco mode, where it can achieve a range that exceeds the average for city ebikes.

Comfort and Ergonomics

The Roadster V3’s geometry is designed for a semi-aggressive riding position, which can be comfortable for riders who prefer a more upright posture. The Selle Royale Vivo saddle offers decent comfort, although some riders may find it a bit firm. The handlebar width is suitable for most riders, and the ergonomic grips provide a comfortable grip.

Additional Features and Considerations

  • Fenders: While the Roadster V3 comes without fenders, they can be purchased separately, which is essential for keeping you dry in wet weather.
  • Lights: The bike’s built-in lights are bright and provide good visibility, especially in low-light conditions. However, the taillight does not have a brake light function, which can be a safety concern.
  • Accessories: Ride1Up offers a range of accessories for the Roadster V3, including a rear rack, panniers, and a water bottle holder.
  • Maintenance: The Roadster V3 is relatively low-maintenance, especially if you opt for the belt drive option. However, regular maintenance, such as checking tire pressure and cleaning the chain (if applicable), is still necessary.

Should You Buy the Ride1UP Roadster V3?

The Ride1Up Roadster V3 is an excellent value for the price. It’s a lightweight, efficient, and affordable city ebike with a lot to offer riders who are looking for a comfortable and easy-to-ride option. Its responsive handling, efficient motor, and comfortable riding position make it suitable for both commuting and recreational riding.

While the stiff ride and lack of a brake light may be drawbacks for some riders, the Roadster V3’s overall value proposition is hard to beat.

Alternative E-Bikes:

If you’re looking for a more comfortable ride, you might consider the Mokwheel Obsidian. This ebike offers a more upright riding position and a softer suspension, making it ideal for riders who prioritize comfort. However, it is generally more expensive than the Roadster V3.

Another alternative is the Rad Power Bikes RadCity. This ebike offers a similar range and power output to the Roadster V3, but it comes with a step-through frame and a larger battery. The RadCity is also a bit heavier than the Roadster V3, but it offers a more comfortable ride and a longer range.
