San Antonio Awarded $1.2 Million Grant to Boost Sustainability Efforts

San Antonio is taking a big step towards a greener future thanks to a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE). This grant will fund three key sustainability projects across the city.

E-Bikes for All: Expanding Mobility Options

One of the most exciting initiatives is a $1,000 e-bike rebate program for low-income residents. This program recognizes the challenges faced by residents who lack access to reliable transportation. E-bikes offer an affordable and eco-friendly way to get around, improving access to jobs, services, and resources. The city is partnering with Opportunity Home to identify eligible participants, with the goal of having around 170 residents benefit from the program by the end of the year.

Powering Up the Future: Expanding EV Charging Infrastructure

Another project funded by the grant involves installing six new Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at Opportunity Home multifamily residences. This initiative tackles the issue of limited charging infrastructure, a major barrier to widespread EV adoption. While acknowledging the affordability gap for EVs, the city is exploring additional solutions like car-sharing models to make electric vehicles more accessible in the future. Residents can expect to see these charging stations operational by spring 2025.

Greening the Skies: San Antonio Airport Energy Master Plan

The third initiative focuses on developing an Energy Master Plan for the San Antonio International Airport. This plan will explore ways to improve energy efficiency and resilience, potentially incorporating renewable energy sources and battery storage solutions. As a major energy consumer, the airport holds significant potential for environmental impact reduction.

A Call to Action for Texas

This grant is part of a larger DOE program awarding $150 million to government entities nationwide. While San Antonio is leading the way in Texas, there are still 95 government entities in the state that have yet to apply for their share of the funding. The DOE encourages these entities to take advantage of this opportunity to invest in a more sustainable future.

This grant demonstrates San Antonio’s commitment to sustainability and paves the way for a greener, more equitable city for all.
