E-Bike Fire in the Bronx Injures Eight, Including a Child

On the evening of September 28, 2024, a fire broke out in a residential building located at 15 East 199th Street in the Bronx, leaving eight people injured, including a child. The fire originated in a first-floor apartment and was reported around 5:54 PM. The FDNY dispatched 12 units and approximately 60 personnel to combat the flames, which were declared under control by 7:26 PM.
Witnesses reported that the fire spread smoke throughout the building, causing residents to evacuate quickly. At least seven individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, although their conditions remain unclear. Fire marshals are currently investigating the incident, particularly focusing on the involvement of multiple e-bikes found at the scene.
Residents described hearing smoke detectors and experiencing heavy smoke, with one resident stating it smelled like burning plastic. Many residents escaped via fire escapes, but there were no organized fire drills or clear evacuation instructions in the building, which raised concerns about preparedness.
