KTM Unveils ‘Super-Advanced’ Electric Bikes for Young Riders

KTM, known for its rugged and performance-driven motorcycles, has unveiled two exciting additions to its electric mini cross bike lineup aimed at young riders. Described with an unusual “super-advanced” label, these new SX-E models—the SX-E 5 and SX-E 3—promise to deliver a thrilling ride for kids, with capabilities on par with 50cc motorcycles.

For the 2025 model year, KTM has made a range of improvements to both bikes, enhancing their performance and rideability. While the two models share many common features, there are also key differences between them.

Common Features: Built for the Next Generation of Riders

Both the SX-E 5 and SX-E 3 are designed to introduce a new era for young riders and future racers. The bikes are built around a strong chromium-molybdenum steel frame, upgraded for 2025 to offer improved durability, handling, and a reinforced rear shock mounting point. This robust frame provides the foundation for these electric bikes, allowing them to handle challenging terrains while keeping young riders safe.

To accommodate growing riders, both bikes feature a subframe made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic, adjustable for different rider sizes. Seat height can also be adjusted by modifying the position of the forks and rear shock, making these bikes adaptable as children grow.

To ensure comfort and control, KTM equipped the SX-E models with aluminum alloy Neken handlebars, featuring thinner ODI grips specifically designed for electric bikes. Both models also ride on sturdy black anodized aluminum wheels, with the SX-E 3 featuring 10-inch wheels and the SX-E 5 riding on 12-inch wheels, both wrapped in Maxxcross MX-ST tires for all-terrain performance.

Safety is a top priority for KTM, so both bikes come with advanced safety features. A rollover sensor cuts off power if the bike tips over, and a wrist lanyard cut-off key ensures power is stopped if the rider loses control. Additionally, both models feature a multifunctional display that shows battery levels and allows riders to choose from six different riding modes.

2025 KTM SX-E 3: The Perfect Entry-Level E-Bike for Young Riders

The SX-E 3 is KTM’s entry-level electric bike, designed for smaller, beginner riders. It’s powered by an air-cooled motor producing 3.8 kW of power, paired with a 648 Wh battery pack. This setup provides up to two hours of riding time when used conservatively, although intense riding can drain the battery in as little as 30 minutes. One key feature is the swappable battery, which can be replaced with the higher-capacity unit from the SX-E 5.

The bike’s suspension system consists of a WP XACT upside-down fork with 144 mm of travel up front, and a rear shock providing 129 mm of travel. For easy control, the rear brake is operated via the handlebar, making it user-friendly for young riders.

2025 KTM SX-E 5: A “Super-Advanced” E-Bike for Experienced Riders

For those a bit more familiar with motocross, the SX-E 5 packs more punch, earning the “super-advanced” label KTM enthusiastically uses. The bike is equipped with a water-cooled permanent magnet motor delivering 5.0 kW of peak power, significantly boosting its performance. The 907 Wh battery pack offers up to two hours of ride time, 30% more than its predecessor. Charging is quick too—it takes just 70 minutes to fully recharge the battery.

The SX-E 5’s suspension is also more advanced, with a fully adjustable WP XACT air fork offering 205 mm of travel up front and a WP XACT shock absorber at the rear, adjustable for preload, rebound, and high/low speed compression. Unlike the SX-E 3, the rear brake on the SX-E 5 is foot-operated, giving experienced riders more control.

Availability

Both of these electric mini cross bikes will be available at KTM dealerships starting in December 2024. Although pricing details haven’t been disclosed yet, KTM’s signature orange color scheme will, as always, dominate the look of these exciting new models.
