Northern Colorado City Launches Electric Scooter and Bike Program
As the holiday season brings bustling activity to Greeley, a new and exciting transportation initiative is taking center stage in the city. In a pilot program that started quietly in October, Greeley has launched an electric scooter and bike service, aiming to make short trips around town easier and more convenient. Working in partnership with Spin, the program is a test run, with the potential for expansion in the spring.
A Test Run for a Greener Future
The idea behind the program is simple: provide residents and visitors with an eco-friendly and accessible alternative to driving, particularly for shorter journeys. With around 70 electric scooters and bikes deployed across select areas of town, the initiative is focused on downtown and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The goal? To improve connectivity between campus life and the downtown area, making it easier for students, locals, and tourists to get around town without relying on traditional modes of transportation.
According to Greeley Transportation Planner, Hannah Feldmann, the program is all about understanding the challenges and opportunities it presents. “We also want to understand what the barriers for the campus community are to go downtown,” Feldmann said, highlighting the city’s focus on building stronger connections between its neighborhoods.
Early Success and Challenges
Since its soft launch, the program has already recorded around 1,600 rides, demonstrating a level of interest and demand for the new service. Downtown Sound manager Ben Jankow, who has lived in Greeley his entire life, sees the introduction of scooters and bikes as a sign of the city’s ongoing growth and evolution.
However, while Jankow is optimistic, he acknowledges that there are concerns to address. For example, he’s heard about potential issues such as clutter on the streets and environmental impacts, which could arise from the widespread use of shared vehicles. “Greeley’s in a very transitional period right now,” he said, emphasizing the need for the city to carefully consider its approach.
Despite the challenges, Jankow remains hopeful for a positive outcome. “I’m hoping for more positive than negative feedback,” he added, indicating that the program could ultimately be a beneficial addition to the community if managed well.
The Future: Expanding the Fleet and Enhancing the Experience
As winter sets in, Greeley’s electric scooter and bike program is still in its pilot phase, but plans for expansion are already being discussed. With discussions ongoing with City Council, there is a possibility that the city and Spin will introduce more scooters and bikes when the weather warms up in the spring.
The goal is clear: to continue making short trips more convenient, reducing reliance on traditional cars, and contributing to a more sustainable future for Greeley. As the program evolves, city officials and residents alike are excited to see how it could reshape the way people move around town, bringing new energy and possibilities to the area.
For now, the pilot program serves as a promising first step toward a greener, more connected community, and as Jankow puts it, “only time will tell” whether Greeley is ready to embrace a new era of urban mobility.
