Seattle Startup Fairway Bikes Raises $1.25M to Revolutionize Golf with Electric Bikes

Fairway Bikes, a Seattle-area startup, has raised $1.25 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of its innovative electric bike designed specifically for golfers. This unique three-wheeled e-bike is built to enhance the golfing experience by providing a quicker and more enjoyable way to get around the course, while still offering a bit of exercise for riders.

Launched last year, Fairway Bikes’ golf e-bike bridges the gap between the traditional motorized golf cart and the manual pull cart. It’s designed to keep the pace of play fast without compromising the fun and relaxation that golf offers. Earlier this year, GeekWire put the bike to the test and reported on its potential to change how golfers navigate courses.

Currently, Fairway Bikes has partnered with three premier golf courses in Washington state—Suncadia Resort, Bear Creek Country Club, and Twin Lakes Golf & Country Club—where golfers can rent and ride these electric bikes. According to CEO Alex Wunderlich, there’s growing demand, with more than 50 courses expressing interest in offering the bikes to their members. The recent influx of capital will be used to ramp up production to meet this demand.

Fairway Bikes was founded in 2021 by tech industry veteran Jim Billmaier, a seasoned entrepreneur who has collaborated with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen on multiple ventures. Billmaier’s expertise, combined with the rising popularity of golf and the push to improve the pace of play, has positioned Fairway Bikes for success.

The startup also recently added Ty Collins, co-founder of Rad Power Bikes, as an advisor. Collins, who helped establish Seattle-based Rad Power Bikes as a leading e-bike manufacturer, praised Fairway Bikes for its specialized design. “This isn’t just an e-bike with a golf bag rack attached,” Collins noted. “It’s a purpose-built product, and that really comes through when you’re riding it.”

Fairway Bikes isn’t the only company exploring new ways for golfers to get around. Other innovative options include the GolfBoard, an electric four-wheeler that rides like a skateboard, and the Finn Cycle, an electric motorcycle-style vehicle designed for golfers.

Fairway Bikes’ growing team includes COO Frank Paganelli, who brings experience from his time as COO at Full Circle, a produce delivery service, and CTO Alex Millie, a veteran in product engineering. Investors backing the company include Andrew Weber, CEO of water filtration company Grayl, and Brad Griffith, founder of the ticketing platform GameTime. Additionally, Scott McNealy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems (where Billmaier also worked), is an advisor.

With Wunderlich as the startup’s sole full-time employee, Fairway Bikes has positioned itself at the forefront of a new trend in golf: eco-friendly, exercise-focused transportation that enhances the player experience while keeping the pace of play moving.
