Bafang M510RS and M560RS Production Versions Set for Sept. 4 Debut

MISANO, Italy – September 3, 2026

Bafang is preparing to publicly unveil the production versions of its new M510RS and M560RS eMTB mid-drive systems at the International Bike Festival in Misano, Italy, from September 4 through September 6, 2026. The two RS systems build on Bafang’s existing M510 and M560 platforms, but the changes go beyond higher power figures. Bafang has added 6-axis inertial sensing, adaptive Sport+ assistance, revised control algorithms and a short-duration Boost-to-Limit mode designed to temporarily unlock maximum assistance.

Current Status: Production Versions Debut September 4

Bafang announced the production versions of the M510RS and M560RS on August 19, 2026. Their public debut is scheduled for the International Bike Festival from September 4 through September 6 in Misano, with test rides planned at the event.

The RS systems were first shown as concepts at Eurobike 2025. Bafang says mass production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

That distinction is important. These are production-version motors rather than early concepts, but Bafang has not said that finished M510RS- or M560RS-equipped e-bikes are already broadly available to consumers. Actual bike availability will depend on manufacturers adopting the new systems and bringing those models to market.

Bafang M510RS vs. M560RS Specifications

Both motors are rated at 250W in Bafang’s current OEM specifications, but the company lists much higher short-duration maximum output figures when Boost-to-Limit is used.

The distinction between rated power, normal peak torque and Boost-to-Limit output matters. The 1,700W and 150 Nm figures associated with the M560RS represent Bafang’s maximum figures, not its continuous rated output.

The 6-Axis IMU May Be More Important Than the Power Numbers

The large torque and power figures will probably attract the most attention, but one of the more significant changes is the addition of a 6-axis inertial measurement unit, or IMU.

Both RS motors use a 6-axis IMU to detect changes in terrain and gradient. On the M510RS, Bafang specifically says the system combines IMU information with torque, cadence and wheel-speed data in real time to interpret gradient and rider input.

The goal is to give the motor more information about what the bike and rider are doing instead of relying on pedal input alone.

Bafang also says the RS control algorithms received more than 4,000 hours of race-track fine-tuning. That figure comes from the manufacturer and should not be treated as independent performance testing, but it shows how much emphasis Bafang is placing on motor control and software rather than simply increasing torque.

What Is Bafang Sport+?

Sport+ is Bafang’s new adaptive assistance mode for the RS systems.

Bafang says Sport+ can provide up to 500% adaptive assistance, adjusting motor output as riding conditions and rider input change.

On the M510RS, Bafang describes the system as making pedal-by-pedal adjustments based on information from the motor’s sensors and IMU. The M560RS also uses Sport+ with up to 500% adaptive support.

Whether those changes translate into noticeably smoother climbing, better traction or more predictable handling will need to be evaluated once independent testers ride production-equipped eMTBs.

Boost-to-Limit Raises Assistance to 800%

The most aggressive feature is Boost-to-Limit.

Bafang describes Boost-to-Limit as a short-duration overdrive function intended for extreme obstacles. It can temporarily provide as much as 800% assistance while allowing the motor to reach its maximum listed torque and power figures.

For the 48V M510RS, Bafang’s OEM specifications list up to 1,300W and 130 Nm. For the 48V M560RS, the maximum figures rise to 1,700W and 150 Nm.

Those numbers should not be confused with continuous motor output. Both systems are listed with 250W rated power, while the much larger figures represent maximum possible output under the conditions described by Bafang.

Bafang Claims Faster Response and More Sensitive Power Cutoff

Bafang says both RS systems respond 50% faster than their standard counterparts and provide a 33% more sensitive power stop.

Those percentages are manufacturer claims comparing the M510RS with the standard M510 and the M560RS with the standard M560. Independent testing will be needed to determine how noticeable the differences are in real-world trail riding.

Power cutoff behavior can be especially important on technical terrain. A high-output motor that continues assisting longer than a rider expects can make tight turns, rocky sections and low-speed maneuvering more difficult.

Both motors also include Hill Hold and Walk Assist 2.0. Bafang confirms those features in its product information, although I am not assigning additional operating characteristics to Hill Hold until more detailed documentation is available.

Existing M510 and M560 Frames May Be Easier for Manufacturers to Adapt

Bafang says the M510RS and M560RS retain the same mounting interface as the existing M510 and M560 systems.

That could make the RS motors easier for e-bike manufacturers to incorporate into existing frame platforms without redesigning the entire motor mounting area.

It should not be interpreted as confirmation that an owner can simply swap an RS motor into any current M510- or M560-equipped bike. Battery voltage, displays, wiring, firmware, controls and other system components still need to be compatible with the complete drive system.

What About Speed and U.S. E-Bike Legality?

Bafang’s current OEM specifications list a 25 km/h speed configuration for the M510RS and 25 km/h or 45 km/h configurations for the M560RS. Bafang’s launch materials describe the M560RS versions in the context of European and U.S. market requirements.

That should not be read as proof that every finished e-bike using the M560RS will automatically qualify as a legal e-bike everywhere in the United States.

E-bike classification and operating rules depend on the complete bike, how the drive system is configured and the laws in the state or locality where the bike is ridden. Riders should check the specifications and legal classification of the finished e-bike rather than assuming that a motor’s available maximum output determines where the bike can legally be used.

Why the M510RS and M560RS Matter

High torque is not new for Bafang. The standard M510 and M560 already compete in the high-output mid-drive market.

What makes the RS systems more interesting is Bafang’s emphasis on terrain sensing, adaptive assistance and motor-response tuning.

Bicycle Retailer and Industry News also reported the September 4-6 production-version unveiling and highlighted the new 6-axis IMU, revised algorithms, higher maximum output and shared mounting interfaces with the existing M510 and M560 platforms.

The M510RS appears aimed at riders who want strong output with more precise trail response, while the M560RS pushes further toward maximum torque and power for demanding eMTB applications.

My Take

The 1,700W figure will probably get the most attention, but I think the more important question is how controllable these motors feel on a real trail.

More power is not automatically better on loose climbs, rock gardens or tight technical terrain. Smooth engagement, predictable assistance and a quick power cutoff can matter as much as maximum torque.

That is why I am more interested in the 6-axis IMU, Sport+ tuning and claimed response improvements than the peak-power number by itself.

I also want to see independent testing of heat management, battery consumption, noise, traction and ride feel during sustained climbing. Bafang has published impressive specifications, but production-bike testing will tell us how well the complete system works outside controlled development conditions.

For now, the M510RS looks like the more balanced performance option, while the M560RS is clearly positioned for riders and e-bike manufacturers seeking substantially higher maximum output.
