China’s Surprising Shift from Lithium-Ion to Lead-Acid E-Bikes

In a surprising turn of events, China has begun urging its citizens to trade in their lithium-ion battery-powered electric bikes for newer models that use sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries. This might seem counterintuitive at first, given the popularity of lithium-ion technology, but a closer look reveals a mix of safety, policy changes, and future innovations that are driving this shift.

E-Bikes: A Staple of Urban Life in China

Electric bicycles, especially in urban areas, are a key part of daily life in China. With an estimated 350 million electric two-wheelers on the road, e-bikes have become the go-to mode of transport for families, commuters, and young adults. Although they technically need pedals and must cap speeds at 25 km/h (15.5 mph) to qualify as e-bikes, many riders remove the pedals, essentially transforming these vehicles into scooters or mopeds.

For years, the market for e-bikes in China has been dominated by models powered by lithium-ion batteries due to their lightweight, efficiency, and longer lifespan. However, older SLA batteries, a technology over 100 years old, have a long history in China’s electric bike scene. SLA batteries, typically in the form of Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) SLAs, were once the standard. Despite being bulky and heavy, they have been widely used for decades. It’s only in the past decade that China has transitioned toward lithium-ion batteries, which offer notable improvements in both weight and longevity.

The Safety Concerns and the Pushback Against Lithium-Ion Batteries

However, safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries have led to a significant shift in policy. Although lithium-ion batteries are far superior in terms of performance, their potential to catch fire—though rare—has caused alarm. With multiple incidents of e-bike battery fires making headlines, the Chinese government introduced new safety standards for lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes last year. This has sparked growing concerns about the overall safety of these bikes on the road.

Interestingly, in response to these concerns, the Chinese government is now backing a resurgence of AGM-powered e-bikes. Even major players in the electric vehicle industry, such as Yadea and NIU, are producing more AGM-based models for the domestic market, while continuing to export lithium-ion battery e-bikes internationally. This shift back to SLA batteries is being driven by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), which has introduced new policies designed to promote the trade-in of lithium-ion battery e-bikes for safer AGM-powered models.

The New MOC Policy: Trade-Ins, Subsidies, and Recycling

As part of the MOC’s initiative, subsidies are being offered to individuals who trade in their older lithium-ion battery e-bikes for new AGM-powered models. The ministry hopes that this will phase out older, potentially unsafe electric bikes from the streets. The traded-in e-bikes will be dismantled and recycled in an effort to address the environmental impact of e-bike disposal and to reduce the risks posed by older, outdated batteries.

While SLA batteries are known for their higher safety margins and reduced risk of fire, they come with trade-offs. Sealed lead-acid batteries have significantly lower energy density and shorter lifespans compared to lithium-ion batteries. These drawbacks mean that riders may experience reduced range and need to replace batteries more frequently, making SLA-powered e-bikes less convenient in the long term.

Looking Toward the Future: Sodium-Ion Batteries

To solve the limitations of both SLA and lithium-ion batteries, some manufacturers, such as Yadea, are already turning to sodium-ion batteries as the next big innovation. Sodium-ion batteries combine the safety benefits of SLA technology with a much better energy density and longer lifespan, beginning to rival the performance of lithium-ion batteries. Although sodium-ion batteries are still relatively expensive, ongoing investments in production technology could help lower the cost over the next few years.

The Chinese government’s push to promote SLA battery e-bikes might feel like a step backward, given the clear advantages of lithium-ion technology. However, it’s a complex move driven by safety concerns, government policies, and a desire for more sustainable practices.
