Parents Could Soon Pay the Price for Teens’ E-Bike Chaos
Parents in one New York town might soon find themselves footing the bill for their kids’ reckless e-bike behavior.
East Aurora, a quiet town in Erie County, is cracking down. Why? Too many teens and tweens are running wild on e-bikes—and town leaders have had enough.
E-bikes have exploded in popularity across the U.S. They’re fast, fun, and cheaper than driving. They also cut down on pollution. But there’s a downside.
Cities everywhere are reporting problems—especially with younger riders. Some kids are zipping around on illegal e-bikes. Others are riding without following the rules. Sometimes, it’s both.
Now, East Aurora wants to shift some responsibility to parents.
Under current New York law, parents can only be cited if they’re present when their child (15 or younger) breaks e-bike laws. East Aurora’s plan? Remove that loophole. If the law passes, parents could face penalties no matter where they were when the incident happened.
Sheriff John Garcia says the town has seen more and more violations. And with those come bigger risks—to both riders and everyone else on the road.
Not everyone supports the plan, though.
“I’ve talked to parents who aren’t thrilled,” said Police Chief Patrick Welch. “Some say, ‘let kids be kids.’ That’s fine—until a car hits somebody.”
The town board will vote on the proposal later this month. If it passes, it becomes law.
East Aurora could soon set the tone for other towns watching closely.
