Hinsdale, Illinois Bans Kids from Riding E-Scooters as Town Cracks Down on E-Bike Use

Hinsdale, a suburb in Illinois, is getting serious about electric bikes and scooters โ€” especially when it comes to kids.โ€” especially when it comes to kids. A new rule now bans children from riding electric scooters in the village. And thatโ€™s just the start.

Why? Officials say itโ€™s all about public safety.

โ€œThese things can hit 50 miles an hour,โ€ said Village President Greg Hart. โ€œKids shouldnโ€™t be on them โ€” especially without helmets.โ€

Since the ordinance took effect on May 5, police have issued 150 citations. The fines? Theyโ€™re no joke. Riders can get hit with up to $750 per violation.

Most of the riders causing concern are middle schoolers. And while there haven’t been serious injuries yet, Hart says itโ€™s only a matter of time. โ€œWe think itโ€™s a ticking time bomb,โ€ he warned.

State law says e-bikes must have an output under 750 watts. But there’s no minimum age requirement. Thatโ€™s part of the problem. With prices dropping โ€” some bikes that used to cost $1,000 now go for $300 โ€” more kids are getting their hands on them.

But riding one illegally can do more than cost you money. One violation could even delay a childโ€™s ability to get a driverโ€™s license later.

Hinsdale isnโ€™t alone. Nearby Schaumburg recently set a minimum riding age of 16.

Local businesses are also stepping in. Kramer Foods in downtown Hinsdale has seen near-misses in its parking lot. To keep customers safe, the store put up barricades made of grocery carts. But that hasnโ€™t stopped all kids โ€” some treat it like a game.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to ride in a parking lot,โ€ said store manager Michael Kinnavy. โ€œFind an open area, somewhere safer.โ€

Even some parents agree itโ€™s gone too far. โ€œItโ€™s just a matter of time before someone gets hit,โ€ said Tom Urban, a Hinsdale parent.

To help, the village is also focusing on education. Officials want kids to understand the risks that come with riding fast, motorized devices โ€” before someone gets seriously hurt.
