Federal Funds to Expand Bluebikes with Electrified Stations for E-Bikes
The highly popular pedal-assist electric Bluebikes, introduced in December 2023, have quickly become a favorite among riders in the Greater Boston area. Though e-bikes make up just 15% of the total Bluebikes fleet, they accounted for nearly one-third of all Bluebikes trips during the winter of 2024. Despite their popularity, the current system faces a challenge: existing Bluebikes stations cannot recharge the electric bikes, requiring technicians to manually swap out depleted batteries—an expensive and time-consuming process.
“They’re very popular, but without the ability to charge e-bikes at stations, it’s a tremendous staffing expense,” explained Eric Bourassa from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC).
“In a significant development, MAPC recently secured $21.6 million in federal funding through a competitive grant aimed at reducing traffic congestion in major cities. This funding, awarded as part of the MAPC’s congestion relief program, will allocate around $10 million to address the e-bike charging issue and support further ridership growth within the Bluebikes system.”
This funding will be used to install 32 electrified Bluebikes docking stations in key urban areas, including Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, allowing e-bikes to be recharged directly at stations. Additionally, the grant will provide for 32 non-electric infill stations in more suburban cities such as Watertown, Newton, Chelsea, and Malden. These new stations will improve access to Bluebikes for residents in those areas, though specific locations have not yet been determined.
To further bolster the system, the funding will also enable the expansion of the Bluebikes fleet with the addition of 90 new e-bikes and 290 new pedal bikes.
This expansion represents a major step forward in enhancing the convenience and efficiency of the Bluebikes system, ensuring that both urban and suburban users have greater access to shared bikes while easing the logistical burden of maintaining the e-bike fleet.
