Rad Power Bikes Sold for 13.2 Million Dollars – What It Means for Riders in 2026

Last Updated on January 29, 2026 by Kristina

Rad Power Bikes, once North America’s most recognizable and widely sold electric bike brand, has agreed to sell its assets in a bankruptcy auction for approximately 13.2 million dollars to Life Electric Vehicles Holdings Inc. This follows Rad Power’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in December 2025, after the company faced declining demand, financial pressure, and growing safety scrutiny.

This sale represents a dramatic fall from Rad Power’s peak valuation of about 1.65 billion dollars in 2021, when the brand was one of the fastest-growing names in the e-bike industry.

How the Sale Unfolded

The asset auction, held on January 22, 2026, attracted multiple bidders. Life EV’s winning bid of 13,276,102 dollars in cash narrowly beat a 13 million dollar offer from Retrospec, which now stands as the backup bidder. Life EV also agreed to assume certain liabilities, bringing the total deal value to about 14.9 million dollars.

The transaction still requires bankruptcy court approval and is expected to close in mid to late February 2026.

Life EV is a Florida-based company that also owns the e-bike brand Serial 1, originally launched by Harley-Davidson. While Life EV has stated there is “an exciting future being planned” for Rad Power, no specific plans for models, branding, or long-term support have been announced.

From Boom to Bankruptcy

Rad Power Bikes was founded in 2007 and became a household name during the pandemic e-bike boom. Sales surged in 2020 and 2021, and the company raised more than 300 million dollars in venture funding.

At its height, Rad Power expanded aggressively into physical retail stores, international markets, and a large direct-to-consumer operation. When post-pandemic demand slowed and supply chain costs rose, the company struggled to maintain its growth model.

Leadership changes followed, including the appointment of a new CEO in 2024 as the company attempted to stabilize operations and rebuild investor confidence.

What This Means for Rad Power Owners

For current riders and anyone considering buying a Rad Power e-bike, the most important question is support, warranty coverage, and parts availability.

Here is what owners should keep in mind:

  • This was an asset sale, not a full company acquisition, which means the buyer did not automatically take on all customer obligations.
  • Warranty programs and official support channels may change once the sale closes.
  • Proprietary parts, such as batteries, displays, and controllers, can become harder to source if brand support is reduced.
  • Local bike shops and third-party repair services may become the primary long-term service option for many riders.

Why the Brand Declined

Several industry and internal pressures combined to weaken Rad Power’s position:

  • Overexpansion after the pandemic boom, leading to high operating costs and excess inventory
  • Increased competition from both budget brands and premium manufacturers
  • Battery safety concerns and regulatory scrutiny, which raised compliance costs and impacted consumer trust
  • Multiple rounds of layoffs and leadership turnover, which disrupted long-term strategy

Together, these challenges pushed the company into Chapter 11 protection and an eventual asset sale.

What Life Electric Vehicles Could Do Next

Life EV has not released a formal roadmap, but industry analysts suggest a few possible paths:

  • Relaunching select Rad Power models with tighter quality control and safety certifications
  • Integrating Rad’s designs or supply chain into Life EV’s existing electric mobility brands
  • Restructuring customer support and warranty programs under a new operating model

Whether Rad Power continues as a consumer-facing brand or becomes part of a broader electric vehicle portfolio remains to be seen.

My Take

This is one of the most significant moments in the modern e-bike industry. Rad Power was not just another brand. It was the company that helped push electric bikes into the mainstream across North America.

A few things stand out to me:

  • The valuation collapse tells a bigger story. Going from a 1.65 billion dollar valuation to a 13.2 million dollar asset sale shows how quickly the hardware and mobility market can shift when growth slows and costs rise.
  • Serviceability matters more than ever. Riders should think beyond specs and price. Access to local repair, standard components, and long-term parts availability can matter more than brand reputation alone.
  • This reshapes the Rad story rather than ending it. The brand and its designs may continue under Life EV, but warranty coverage and official support are now far less certain for existing owners.

For buyers and long-term riders, the lesson is simple: company stability and real-world service support should be part of every e-bike buying decision, not just motor power and range.
