Volkswagen Smart eBike Heads to IFA With 230-Foot Radar and Rear Camera

Wolfsburg, Germany – August 18, 2026. n+ has released new details about its Volkswagen-licensed Smart eBike ahead of the bike’s public demonstration at IFA Berlin in September. The system combines a rear-facing radar, camera, integrated display, connected lighting, and optional wearable technology designed to improve a rider’s awareness of approaching traffic.

The announcement expands on the Volkswagen and n+ smart e-bike technology I covered in July, with more detail about how the Smart View system works and when riders will get their first public chance to try it. Current Status: Public IFA Demonstrations Planned for September

The Volkswagen Smart eBike has been announced, but the European product pages still describe the bikes as pre-production models. n+ says deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 after manufacturing is completed and applicable certification requirements are met.

Before then, n+ plans to demonstrate the Volkswagen-licensed Smart eBike at IFA Berlin from September 4-8, 2026. Visitors are expected to be able to test ride the bike on the Mobility Test Track and see the Smart View radar and rear-camera system operating in real riding conditions.

How the Claimed 230-Foot Radar and Rear Camera Work

The centerpiece of the Smart eBike is a system called Smart View. It combines a rear-facing radar and camera with a full-color display integrated into the handlebars.

According to n+, the radar continuously monitors traffic as far as 70 meters, or about 230 feet, behind the rider. It is designed to identify vehicles and other road users approaching the bike at a higher speed.

The 230-foot figure is a manufacturer claim and has not been independently tested by Electric Bike Explorer.

Riders can use the display in three different ways. One mode shows normal riding information such as speed, pedal-assist level, power output, battery status, and trip data. Another provides a continuous rear-camera view.

In Auto Mode, the screen normally functions as the bike dashboard but automatically switches to the rear-camera feed when the radar detects approaching traffic. Depending on the selected view, the rider can also receive a blind-spot warning or an orange alert across the camera display.

The Bike Can Also Signal Braking and Turns

n+ is combining the radar system with lighting built into the bike itself.

Full-length LED strips run along both sides of the top tube. They normally function as amber side-marker lights and can increase in brightness when the radar detects an approaching vehicle. The lighting system can also function as turn signals and brake indicators.

There is an important legal limitation, especially because the bike is being demonstrated in Germany. n+ states that some of its behavioral Smart Lights functions are not street-legal in certain countries, including Germany and France. Riders would need to follow the lighting and equipment rules that apply where they ride.

That combination is still noteworthy because the technology is not only trying to tell the rider what is happening behind the bike. It is also designed to make the rider’s intentions more visible to drivers and other road users.

Smart Helmet and Smart Glasses Extend the System

The bike can also connect with optional Smart Glasses and a Smart Helmet.

The Smart Glasses use a heads-up display to show information including radar blind-spot alerts, navigation directions, speed, distance, and battery status in the rider’s field of view. n+’s published materials use conflicting terminology for the display technology itself, so I am not treating the specific panel type as verified.

According to n+, the Smart Helmet includes more than 500 lumens of front, rear, and side lighting and is designed to mirror the bike’s braking and turn signals. n+ also lists MIPS impact-protection technology, NTA 8776 certification, and crash detection that can alert an emergency contact with the rider’s location after a serious impact.

Why This Matters for E-Bike Riders

Radar-assisted rear awareness is not completely new to cycling as a standalone accessory, but n+ is trying to integrate the radar, camera, display, bike lighting, helmet, and glasses into one connected system.

That could be especially useful for commuters riding alongside faster motor traffic, where knowing that a vehicle is approaching from behind can influence lane positioning, turning, or passing a parked vehicle.

There are still important questions that public testing will need to answer. Detection range is only part of the equation. Riders will also want to know how reliably the system identifies traffic, how useful the automatic camera switching feels in practice, and whether the display provides information without becoming another source of distraction.

The European Volkswagen-licensed Smart eBike pages currently describe the bikes as pre-production models, so it is also worth watching whether specifications, certification status, or availability change before deliveries begin.

My Take

I think the most important part of this announcement is not simply that Volkswagen-branded automotive-inspired technology is appearing on an e-bike. It is the way several safety functions have been designed to work together.

A radar warning by itself can tell you something is approaching. A camera can show you what it is. Turn and brake lighting can help communicate what you are doing. Connecting those systems could make the technology much more useful than treating each one as a separate accessory.

At the same time, I would not treat radar or a camera as a replacement for normal rider awareness, appropriate shoulder checks, safe lane positioning, or defensive riding. The real test will be how predictable and useful Smart View feels when riders actually use it around traffic.

The September demonstrations at IFA Berlin should give riders a much better look at whether this system feels like meaningful rider-assistance technology or simply an impressive list of features.
