Chapel Hill, North Carolina Launches E-Bike Lending Library
Last Updated on May 14, 2025 by Kristina
Chapel Hill is taking bold steps toward a greener future. As part of the town’s “Everywhere to Everywhere” greenways project, officials are encouraging more residents to ditch their cars and try biking or walking instead. One creative solution? The brand-new E-Bike Lending Library, which rolled out in April.
The idea is simple. Residents aged 18 or older can borrow an electric bike for up to seven days—for free. All it takes is filling out a quick online form. After that, you can swing by one of two local bike shops to pick up your ride.
Brennan Bauma, Chapel Hill’s Sustainability Program Analyst, helped launch the initiative. He explains the motivation behind it:
“The Chapel Hill Town Council has been really focused on giving people more options to get around without using their cars.”
About 18 months ago, the Office of Sustainability secured federal funding. That gave them the green light to move forward with the program.
Many cities have bike-share programs, but Chapel Hill’s approach is a bit different. Instead of short-term rides, this library lets you test an e-bike for several days—like a real trial run before buying one. That way, riders get to experience what it’s like to actually live with an e-bike.
Mayor Jess Anderson shares the town’s excitement.
“I’m so excited about this program,” she said during a recent radio interview. “We’re working hard to make our greenways more accessible and show people how easy it is to get around by e-bike.”
Getting started is easy. After submitting the form online, you’re encouraged to call the shop in advance to check availability. So far, bikes have been in good supply—despite the program’s fast start.
Two bike shops are participating: The Bicycle Chain and Trek Chapel Hill on Elliott Road. Both have been enthusiastic partners.
Sarah Fountain from The Bicycle Chain has seen a big uptick in visitors.
“It’s been a lot busier than we thought,” she says. “People are excited to try one—especially if they’re thinking of buying but aren’t sure yet.”
Each location offers three types of e-bikes:
- Standard e-bike – great for everyday riding.
- Cargo e-bike – ideal for errands or carrying groceries.
- E-trike – a three-wheeled option for those who want extra stability.
Whether you’re borrowing for a few hours or a whole week, the program is a great way to explore Chapel Hill on two—or three—wheels.
