Cynergy E-Bikes, Southeast Portland’s All-Electric Bike Shop, Calls It Quits

In a disappointing turn for Portland’s electric bike community, Cynergy E-Bikes, an all-electric bike shop located on Southeast Powell Blvd and SE 36th, has announced that it is closing its doors after a decade of business. The shop, which was purchased by owner Sami Khawaja five years ago, had become a well-known name in Portland’s growing e-bike market. However, after 10 years in operation, Khawaja says the shop can no longer compete with online giants like Amazon.

In a heartfelt email sent to customers this week, Khawaja explained, “We are throwing in the towel,” adding, “We simply cannot compete with the internet and Amazon. We have no choice but to move on.” He expressed deep gratitude to customers for their support over the years and acknowledged the challenging landscape faced by brick-and-mortar retailers in today’s e-commerce-driven world.

Cynergy E-Bikes Is the Latest to Close in a Tough Year for Portland Bike Shops

Cynergy E-Bikes marks the fourth bike shop to shut its doors in Portland this year. Earlier this year, Gladys Bikes closed in February, followed by Citybikes in September and Kenton Cycle Repair in October. The closures come amidst a booming market for electric bikes in Portland, with shops seeing an increase in e-bike sales and many even dedicating entire spaces to electric models, such as River City Bicycles. However, Cynergy E-Bikes’ closure is particularly notable, as it was the city’s first shop exclusively dedicated to electric bikes.

Despite the shop’s closure, Khawaja reassured customers that Cynergy’s commitment to service remains intact. He shared that while the retail shop will no longer operate, the business will continue to service bikes at its current location. “We will continue to service bikes at our current location until we find a business to sublease our space. At that point, we will move to a new smaller and less expensive location,” he said.

Everything Must Go: Cynergy’s Final Sale

As the shop prepares to close its doors, Cynergy E-Bikes is holding a special “E-Commerce E-Screwed Cynergy E-Bikes” sale, offering discounts ranging from 20-50% off a variety of items, including e-bikes, helmets, apparel, locks, tires, and more. This is a great opportunity for e-bike enthusiasts to pick up a deal on quality products before the shop officially closes its retail operation.

The Challenges of Competing with E-Commerce

The closure of Cynergy E-Bikes highlights a larger issue facing independent bike shops, particularly those selling specialized products like electric bikes. While e-bikes have become increasingly popular and sales have surged in recent years, the pressure of competing with online retailers and the sheer convenience of online shopping continues to take its toll on brick-and-mortar businesses.

Cynergy E-Bikes’ story is a reminder of the challenges that local shops face in an age of Amazon and other online giants that offer lower prices and more convenience, making it difficult for smaller businesses to survive.

The Future of E-Bike Shops in Portland

Despite the closure of Cynergy E-Bikes, the future of electric bikes in Portland still looks promising. The demand for e-bikes continues to grow, and while shops like Cynergy E-Bikes may have been forced to close, other local stores are stepping up to meet the needs of e-bike riders. As e-bikes become more mainstream, Portland’s bicycle scene will likely continue to evolve, but the loss of a shop like Cynergy E-Bikes is a somber reminder of the changing retail landscape.
