E-Bike Industry Shake-Up: Electric Bike Company Merges with Integral Electrics
Last Updated on April 12, 2025 by Kristina
The U.S. electric bike market is experiencing a wave of strategic collaborations, with major industry players joining forces in innovative ways. The latest big move comes from Electric Bike Company (EBC), a renowned Southern California-based e-bike manufacturer, which has announced its merger with Integral Electrics, a brand specializing in electric bikes designed for women and shorter-statured riders.
A Merger of Innovation and Customization
Both companies have built strong reputations within the e-bike industry by catering to distinct but complementary markets. EBC has gained recognition for its ultra-customizable e-bikes, allowing customers to choose everything from paint colors to component combinations—even unique material options like locally manufactured wooden fenders. With multiple assembly locations in Newport Beach, California, EBC’s local production approach enables rapid fulfillment of personalized designs ordered online or through hundreds of dealerships across the U.S.
Integral Electrics, on the other hand, has championed inclusivity in cycling, focusing on designs that accommodate a broader range of riders. Founded in 2023 by Laura Belmar and co-founder Paul Freedom, Integral Electrics was born out of Belmar’s own struggles to find a cargo e-bike suitable for transporting her children. The company has since carved out a niche by prioritizing accessibility, gender inclusivity, and practical utility in its bike designs.
By merging under a single brand, Integral Electrics’ thoughtfully designed models will now be incorporated into the EBC lineup. While EBC has primarily focused on cruiser and comfort bikes, Integral Electrics’ cargo e-bikes and trikes will expand the brand’s offerings, enhancing its appeal to a more diverse customer base.
Leadership and Market Growth
As part of the merger, Laura Belmar will take on the role of President and Chief Commercial Officer at EBC, bringing her entrepreneurial expertise and commitment to accessibility to the brand’s leadership team. Integral Electrics’ Advisor Michael Edwards will also join the EBC board, reinforcing the strategic direction of the newly unified company.
EBC founder and CEO Sean Lupton-Smith emphasized the significance of the merger: “Integral’s emphasis on female riders and cargo e-bikes is a welcome addition to the EBC family. We want to stay on the cutting edge of where the e-bike market is headed, and Integral’s innovative approach helps push us forward.”
Belmar echoed this enthusiasm, noting the advantages of EBC’s local manufacturing model. “From my first visit to Electric Bike Company’s California factory, I was incredibly impressed by the emphasis on quality and safety. Shipping bikes fully built and inspected is a game-changer for customer safety. Electric Bike Company has already achieved one of our long-held aspirations. I’m honored to be part of this team.”
Strengthening the E-Bike Ecosystem with Pedego Partnership
This merger follows closely on the heels of another significant industry move—EBC’s recent partnership with Pedego. Through a licensing agreement, Pedego is leveraging EBC’s customization expertise to offer unique, customer-designed e-bikes. As part of the deal, Pedego stores will feature EBC’s Design Wall, an interactive touchscreen that allows customers to visualize and create personalized e-bike configurations in real time.
Beyond customization, the partnership significantly expands the retail and service network for both brands. Pedego’s 150+ stores will now complement EBC’s existing 250+ dealer locations, giving customers access to one of the most extensive e-bike sales and support networks in the country.
The Future of E-Bikes in the U.S.
With the e-bike market facing increasing tariffs, regulatory shifts, and growing competition, local manufacturing and brand synergy have become even more crucial. Freeman highlighted how these factors influenced the merger: “As tariffs, regulation, and competition put pressure on the e-bike industry, Sean’s focus on customization and safety at Electric Bike Company was prescient. He has built a business that is well-positioned to meet this moment.”
As EBC and Integral Electrics move forward together, and with the Pedego partnership further cementing its presence in the industry, the future looks bright for this new era of electric mobility. By combining high-quality local manufacturing, extreme customization, and a commitment to accessibility, the merged companies are set to redefine what an e-bike brand can offer to riders of all backgrounds.
