Could E-Bikes Be Banned from Central Park? NYC Might Decide Soon

Spread the love

In 2018, cars were removed from Central Park’s main drives. Now, another big change could be coming. The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation is wrapping up a study on electric bike use in the park. Their findings will help decide whether e-bikes will still be allowed.

At the same time, a new bill is sitting with the New York City Council. If passed, it would ban all e-bikes and electric scooters from parks across the city—including Central Park.

This bill follows a 2023 pilot program. That program allowed legal bikes, e-bikes, and scooters to use park roads, including the loops in Central and Prospect Parks. Riders were also allowed on greenways, like the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

The city will make its final decision this summer.

But there may be hope for riders. A NYC Parks spokesperson recently said:
“We are committed to ensuring our public spaces can safely accommodate the diverse ways that New Yorkers engage with them, including electric micromobility devices like e-bikes and stand-up e-scooters.”

Public feedback is also being collected. Anyone can share their opinion about e-bike use in Central Park and other greenways.

Still, there are strong opinions on both sides. Critics say e-bikes move too fast and could put walkers and joggers in danger. They also worry these bikes disrupt the calm feel of the park.

Supporters disagree. They say e-bikes help older riders and people with mobility issues enjoy the park. Cargo e-bikes help parents carry kids or groceries. And delivery workers rely on e-bikes to do their jobs.

Central Park isn’t just for leisure. It’s also a main route for people commuting across the city. If e-bikes are banned, many riders may be forced back onto busy, dangerous streets.

This decision matters beyond New York. Other cities are watching. How NYC handles this could shape how e-bikes are treated in parks all over the country.

My Take

Banning e-bikes from Central Park would be a mistake. Parks should be open to more than just slow strolls and jogs. They’re public spaces meant for everyone—including those who rely on electric bikes for work, transport, or mobility. With smart rules and speed limits, we can make parks safe without shutting people out.

Share your thoughts before it’s too late. The future of e-bikes in Central Park is still undecided. Leave your comment, share this post, and make your voice heard while the city is still listening.
