Over 70 Illegal E-Scooters and E-Bikes Seized in UK Crackdown
Cambridgeshire Police, based in the UK, led the operation as part of growing efforts to enforce the country’s laws around electric micromobility vehicles. Over a three-day operation, officers confiscated 68 e-scooters and 4 e-bikes from riders using them illegally.
The operation ran from May 14 to 16 and covered areas including Huntingdon, Hartford, Brampton, Yaxley, St Ives, St Neots, and nearby villages.
According to Cambridgeshire Police, the majority of the seized vehicles were being ridden by underage users, often in unsafe conditions. One rider was just eight years old. Others were seen carrying passengers, and some e-bikes and e-scooters could exceed 30 mph (48 km/h)—far above safe limits for inexperienced riders.
Inspector Colin Norden, who led the initiative, explained the motivation behind the operation. “At every public engagement, e-scooters are highlighted across the district as a concern for residents,” he said.
The concerns aren’t just about legality. Police received reports of e-scooters being used dangerously, as well as in connection with criminal activity. Some were even targeted by thieves.
Current UK law permits e-scooter use only in government-approved rental trials or on private land with permission. Privately owned e-scooters are still illegal to use on public roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
Police say the crackdown was necessary to protect the public. The illegal and unsafe use of these vehicles puts both riders and others at serious risk.
