Super73, the renowned Irvine-based e-bike manufacturer known for its moped-style electric bikes, has announced a recall affecting two of its 2024 models due to a critical brake issue.

? Affected Models

The recall involves approximately 1,400 units of the following models:

  • Z Miami SE in:
    • Bandit Black (black seat)
    • Palladium Gray (camel seat)
    • Astro Orange (black seat)
  • Z Adventure Core in:
    • Sandstorm (black and brown frame)

These e-bikes were sold between April 2024 and September 2024 through Super73’s Irvine store, various bicycle retailers nationwide, and online.

⚠️ Issue Details

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that the retaining pin in the disc brake calipers can loosen and dislodge, potentially leading to brake failure and increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.

To date, Super73 has received 21 reports of loose retaining pins or related brake failures, including one minor injury.

If you own one of the affected models:

  1. Cease use immediately.
  2. Contact Super73 to request a free repair kit.
    • The company will provide a new retaining pin and reimburse up to $50 for professional installation.
    • Submit your installation receipt to Super73 for reimbursement.

Super73 is proactively reaching out to all known purchasers. If you haven’t been contacted, you can reach them directly:

Industry Context

Such recalls are not uncommon in the e-bike industry, as manufacturers continually refine designs and address safety concerns. Often, issues arise from third-party components like brakes or tires. Notable past recalls include:

  • Rad Power Bikes (2022): Nearly 30,000 RadWagon 4 cargo bikes recalled due to tire issues.
  • Lectric XP 3.0 (2023): Approximately 45,000 e-bikes recalled over brake failure risks.

Conclusion

While this recall is concerning, it underscores Super73’s commitment to rider safety by proactively addressing potential hazards. If you own one of the affected e-bikes, take immediate action to ensure your safety and continue enjoying your rides responsibly.
