The Virginia Creeper Trail is Now Open to E-Bikes: A New Chapter for Accessibility and Adventure

The Virginia Creeper Trail, one of Virginia’s most beloved rail trails, is now officially open to e-bike riders on the 17-mile stretch between Abingdon and Damascus—a route affectionately referred to as “Start to the Heart.” This exciting decision, jointly made by both towns, marks a significant step toward inclusivity and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities.

A Trail for Everyone

With the growing popularity of e-bikes across the country, Abingdon and Damascus have amended their ordinances to allow electric power-assisted bicycles along this scenic section of the Virginia Creeper Trail. Previously, e-bikes were not permitted on the trail, but the unanimous 5-0 vote in Abingdon (November 22) and the 3-2 vote in Damascus (December 2) have changed that. The ordinances passed without any opposition during public comment periods, highlighting the community’s support for the change.

Damascus Mayor Katie Lamb expressed her enthusiasm for the decision, saying:

“When faced with long-term recovery after devastation, we need to overcome, adapt, and improvise. I feel that this is a win in a very positive direction for our community.”

Abingdon Mayor Amanda Pillion echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that led to this milestone:

“Our community’s resilience and determination have been unwavering. Reaching this important milestone reflects our collective effort and commitment to creating a stronger, more prosperous future for all.”

The History and Beauty of the Virginia Creeper Trail

The Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail occupies the historic bed of an old mountain railroad that once connected Abingdon and Damascus. Renowned as Virginia’s finest rail trail, the route offers breathtaking views of the Middle and South Forks of the Holston River, valleys, and rolling hills. Highlights include the iconic trestle crossings and scenic glimpses of South Holston Lake’s headwaters.

The trail has long been a vital connection between the two towns, linking their communities and supporting local businesses. From lodging and restaurants to shopping and outdoor services, Abingdon and Damascus are ready to welcome visitors looking to experience the trail’s unique charm.

Upper Trail Closure: A Safety Update

While the Abingdon-to-Damascus section is now open to e-bikes, it’s important to note that the upper half of the Virginia Creeper Trail, stretching from Whitetop Station to Damascus, remains closed. The area was significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, and safety remains a top priority.

The U.S. Forest Service’s initial assessment revealed extensive damage:

  • 18 trestles destroyed
  • 13 trestles standing but damaged
  • Large sections of missing treadway

For now, there is no access past Damascus into the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Visitors seeking updates on the upper section can contact Gwen Mason, Public Affairs Officer, at (54) 676-7045 or via email at gwendolyn.mason@usda.gov.

A Win for E-Bike Enthusiasts

The opening of this section to e-bikes represents more than just policy change; it’s a nod to the evolving needs of outdoor enthusiasts and the importance of accessibility. E-bikes provide opportunities for riders of all fitness levels to enjoy the beauty of the Virginia Creeper Trail, making it easier for families, seniors, and those with physical limitations to participate in outdoor recreation.
