Who This Tandem E-Bike Guide Is For

This guide is for riders who specifically want one electric bicycle built for two people. Addmotor currently lists the M-250 at $3,299 with a 750W Bafang rear-hub motor, 48V 14.5Ah Panasonic battery, 35-45-mile claimed range under its stated PAS-1 conditions, and 450-lb maximum load. The published rider-height ranges are unusually helpful for a tandem: about 5’8″-6’4″ for the captain and 5’4″-6’1″ for the rear rider.

Why It Stands Out

The M-250 combines strong motor output, a high tandem load rating, fat tires, and a much lower price than specialty European or custom American tandems. That makes it especially appealing for recreational couples and riders who need more carrying capacity.

Its biggest drawback is weight. At roughly 90 lb before cargo, this is a substantial bike to move, transport, or lift onto a rack.

The Micargi Raiatea remains current and should not be removed simply because an older article featured it. Micargi currently lists the electric Raiatea at $1,999.99 with a 500W motor and 48V 10.4Ah Samsung battery.

This is a more traditional-looking tandem than the Addmotor, making it appealing to riders who want a straightforward cruiser-style two-person electric bike at a relatively accessible price.

Why It Stands Out

The Raiatea’s strongest argument is simple value. Very few current factory electric tandems sit near the $2,000 mark.

The downside is documentation. Micargi does not publish the same level of tandem-specific rider-fit and combined-load information as brands such as Addmotor, Hase, Circe, or Van Raam. I would contact Micargi before ordering if either rider is unusually short, tall, or heavy.

Also current: Micargi also sells the Aloha 500W electric tandem. Its current listing likewise shows a 48V 10.4Ah Samsung battery and a claimed range of roughly 35 miles depending on riding conditions and assist use. I prefer not to rank both Micargi models in the top eight because they overlap heavily in use case, but the Aloha is worth comparing if you prefer its frame style.

3. Hase Pino E – Best Premium Mixed-Position Tandem

The Hase Pino E is one of the most distinctive electric tandems available. Instead of putting both riders in a conventional upright line, it places the front rider in a recumbent-style position while the rear rider controls the bike from a standard upright position.

Hase currently lists a Shimano EP6 Cargo drive with 85 Nm of torque, a 630Wh battery, a 225 kg / 496 lb maximum load, and a bike weight of about 33 kg / 73 lb. Hase publishes an unusually broad rider-fit range: roughly 150-200 cm for the rear rider and 100-200 cm for the front rider.

The Pino E can accommodate rider pairings that would be difficult on a conventional tandem. That makes it especially interesting for parents and children, couples with a major height difference, touring partners, and some adaptive-riding situations.

The Moustache Samedi 27 X2 deserves a place in a current tandem guide because it remains part of Moustache’s U.S. electric-bike lineup and brings a modern Bosch system to a performance-oriented tandem platform.

The current specification sheet lists a Bosch Performance Line CX Smart System motor, two 545Wh batteries, a bike weight of about 32.6 kg, and a 200 kg gross vehicle weight rating.

Important GVWR Note

A 200 kg GVWR is not the same as saying the bike can carry 200 kg of riders and cargo. GVWR includes the bicycle itself along with riders, accessories, luggage, and anything else being carried. Because Moustache lists the bike at about 32.6 kg, the usable rider-and-cargo allowance will necessarily be lower than 200 kg.

Why It Stands Out

The dual-battery setup is the big attraction for touring. Tandems work a motor and battery harder than normal e-bikes because they carry two riders and typically weigh much more, so a large battery reserve can be genuinely useful on longer rides.

Co-Motion currently lists the Metolius from $19,495. The bike uses the Bosch Performance Line Speed system, with 250W continuous output, up to 600W maximum output, 85 Nm of torque, and assistance up to 28 mph where Class 3 operation is legal. The current configuration combines an 800Wh battery with an additional 400Wh battery.

Why It Stands Out

The Metolius is aimed at serious tandem riders who want premium fabrication, custom fit, high-speed road capability, and a large battery reserve. Co-Motion builds its bikes in Eugene, Oregon, and offers a much more bespoke buying process than mass-market direct-to-consumer brands.

The manufacturer also publishes useful charging information: roughly 2.5 hours to reach 80% and about 5 hours for a full charge under its stated conditions.

da Vinci is a good fit for experienced tandem buyers who care about frame sizing, component choice, and ride quality more than getting the lowest possible price.

Circe also publishes useful rider-weight guidance. The manufacturer recommends about 170 kg / 375 lb combined rider weight, with the captain not exceeding 100 kg / 220 lb and the stoker not exceeding 80 kg / 176 lb.

The Helios is substantially more compact than many full-length tandems and is highly adjustable. That can make it easier to store, transport, and adapt to different rider combinations.

Circe Morpheus note: Circe also offers the Morpheus STEPS semi-recumbent tandem. Its current model page lists Deore hydraulic disc brakes with 180 mm rotors and published limits of 220 lb for the rear rider, 190 lb for the front rider, and 441 lb overall. Circe has had differing brake information on other pages, so confirm the exact current build specification before ordering.

8. Van Raam Twinny Plus – Best Stability-Focused Tandem

The Van Raam Twinny Plus is very different from the other bikes in this guide. It uses four wheels rather than two, which makes it especially interesting for riders who prioritize low-speed stability and accessibility over conventional tandem handling.

Van Raam publishes a 77-89 cm inseam range, a 120 kg / 264 lb maximum for each rider, and a 20 kg / 44 lb rear-rack limit. The electric version weighs about 56.2 kg. Van Raam publishes an average range of about 54 km, with a broader stated range of 41-80 km depending on conditions and configuration.

Why It Stands Out

For riders who are uncomfortable balancing a tall, heavy two-wheel tandem at low speeds, the Twinny Plus offers a fundamentally different approach. That can be valuable in adaptive riding, rehabilitation, recreational programs, or situations where stability matters more than compact size.

The Aloha remains a current Micargi electric tandem and is worth comparing directly with the Raiatea. Micargi currently lists a 500W motor, 48V 10.4Ah Samsung battery, and a claimed range of about 35 miles depending on riding mode and conditions.

Circe Morpheus STEPS

The Morpheus uses a semi-recumbent front-rider layout and deserves consideration for mixed rider sizes and some adaptive uses. It did not make my final eight because the Hase Pino E covers a similar premium semi-recumbent use case while publishing unusually detailed fit and load information.

Campmajó Electric Tandems

Campmajó also produces Bosch-powered electric tandems and now has official U.S. representation through MTB Tandems in Atlanta. The brand belongs on a serious tandem shopper’s research list. I did not rank a specific Campmajó model in the top eight because the public U.S. model-level pricing, rider-fit, and payload documentation was not as complete as the information available for the bikes above.

How to Choose a Tandem E-Bike

Check Both Riders’ Fit – Not Just the Captain

This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when shopping for a tandem. A bike can fit the captain perfectly and still put the stoker in an uncomfortable or unsafe position.

Look for published information on both seating positions. If a manufacturer only lists a generic rider-height range, ask whether that range applies to the captain, the stoker, or both.

The Micargi Raiatea makes sense when budget matters most and you want a traditional tandem layout, but I would get written confirmation on rider fit and combined load before ordering because Micargi’s public specifications are less detailed.

If fit flexibility or adaptive use is the priority, the Hase Pino E stands apart. For serious touring, the dual-battery Moustache Samedi 27 X2 deserves a close look. Riders who want a handcrafted high-performance road tandem and can justify the price should compare the Co-Motion Metolius and da Vinci Tailwind.

Finally, do not underestimate the importance of the non-motor details. Tandem-specific fit, braking, total carrying capacity, storage, transport, and dealer support will affect ownership every bit as much as the motor wattage printed on the product page.
