Rad Power Bikes Appoints Kathi Lentzsch as New CEO
Last Updated on March 14, 2025 by Kristina
Rad Power Bikes has announced the appointment of Kathi Lentzsch as its new CEO, marking a significant leadership shift for the well-known e-bike brand. Lentzsch steps into the role following the recent departure of former CEO Phil Molyneux, who exited the company last week.
Lentzsch’s Background and Experience
Kathi Lentzsch brings a wealth of retail leadership experience to Rad Power. She previously served as CEO of Bartell Drugs from 2018 to 2020, where she successfully guided the company through a merger with Rite-Aid. Beyond that, Lentzsch has held key leadership roles at major retail organizations, including her time as interim CEO of luxury retailer Gumps from 2016 to 2017. Additionally, she spent nearly five years as executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for World Market and three years as senior vice president and division head for Pottery Barn.
“What drew me to Rad is its unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainable transportation, and, most importantly, putting riders first,” Lentzsch stated. “I’m eager to work alongside this talented team to build on Rad’s strong foundation of producing great products and partnering with the best bike shops to bring those e-bikes to riders, complete with a Rad Grin.”
Rad Power’s Shift Toward Retail Expansion
In addition to leadership changes, Rad Power is undergoing a major shift in its business model. Historically focused on direct-to-consumer sales, the company is now emphasizing retail expansion, with plans to grow its Rad Retail and local bike shop presence. This transition is intended to strengthen customer relationships and create new opportunities to reach more riders.
“Rad Power Bikes is at an inflection point, shifting from a direct-to-consumer model to a more retail-focused approach, and it’s an incredible time to come on board,” Lentzsch commented.
Financial Challenges and Recent Layoffs
Despite its ambitious retail strategy, Rad Power has faced challenges in recent years. The company has experienced six rounds of layoffs in three years, including recent cuts to its direct-to-consumer sales staff. This comes after Rad Power secured significant funding, totaling $329 million across multiple investment rounds led by Vulcan Capital and Durable Capital Partners LP.
Looking Ahead
Rad Power’s partnership with Best Buy is a key step in its retail expansion. Last September, the company announced that its e-bikes would be sold in 150 Best Buy stores and on BestBuy.com. Rad Power also recently welcomed bike industry veteran George Lee as its director of sales, reinforcing its commitment to building a robust retail presence.
With Lentzsch at the helm, Rad Power is poised to navigate these transitions while staying true to its mission of promoting innovative and sustainable transportation solutions.
