California’s E-Bike Incentive Program Relaunches May 29 After Website Glitch

California’s e-bike voucher program is officially back on track. After a failed relaunch in April due to technical issues, the state has set a new application date.
The second round of applications will now open on May 29 at 5 p.m., according to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The program offers vouchers worth up to $2,000 to help income-eligible residents buy electric bikes. That includes a base amount of $1,750, plus an extra $250 for priority applicants.
This round will offer 1,000 vouchers. Demand is expected to be high. In December, the first round saw as many as 100,000 people waiting online for just 1,000 spots.
The original relaunch was planned for April 29, but a website issue prevented many users from accessing the system. CARB paused the rollout in real time once they realized people couldn’t enter the waiting room. A new date was promised — and now it’s confirmed.
The program is part of California’s push to reduce car use and carbon emissions. It also helps lower transportation costs, especially for low-income residents.
To qualify, applicants must have a household income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. Those at 225% or below get priority and the additional voucher amount.
Vouchers can be used at approved bike shops on a range of e-bikes, including Class 1, 2, and 3 models, as well as cargo and adaptive bikes.
