Meet Ed McLaughlin: The 96-Year-Old Who’s Ridden 2,000 Miles on an E-Bike
Last Updated on May 23, 2025 by Kristina
At an age when most people are slowing down, Ed McLaughlin is picking up speed—on three wheels.
Just a few months after a hip replacement, Ed noticed his neighbor gliding by on an electric bike. Curious and inspired, he decided to try it himself. That was two years ago. Today, at 96, Ed has logged more than 2,000 miles on his e-trike—and shows no signs of stopping.
“Every day I ride, I feel stronger,” Ed says. “It’s better than sitting around. You’ve got to keep moving.”
Ed lives at Good Samaritan Society–St. Martin Village, a retirement community in Rapid City, South Dakota. It’s here that he met Jim Stone, 78, the neighbor who first introduced him to e-biking. What began as a shared interest quickly turned into a daily routine—and a close friendship.
Each morning starts the same way: breakfast, then a ride. The pair covers about 7 miles, stopping halfway to relax in a park and watch children play. They wrap it up with coffee at the lodge.
On more ambitious days, they go even further. “We’ve done 20-mile rides,” says Jim. “He never thought he’d do that again. But here he is, doing it—and more than once.”
Ed rides a tricycle-style e-bike, which gives him extra stability and comfort. The electric assist helps with hills and long distances, but he still pedals plenty. “It’s real exercise, just with a little boost,” he explains. “I’d rather do this than a treadmill any day.”
What started as a way to stay active has turned into something deeper—routine, purpose, connection. As a veteran, former mayor, and lifelong educator, Ed is no stranger to leading by example. And now, even in retirement, he’s inspiring others to get moving.
“He’s proof that it’s never too late to try something new,” Jim says. “If he can do it, I can do it. We push each other.”
Their rides have become a familiar sight in the community. Neighbors wave, drivers honk, some even stop to chat. Ed is known and loved here—not just for who he was, but for the energy he brings today.
When he’s not riding, Ed stays busy with yoga, water aerobics, and art classes. He’s also a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Despite his age, he lives independently and embraces each day with purpose.
“I think the key is finding something you enjoy and doing it often,” he says. “You’ve got to keep adjusting. Life doesn’t stop.”
On June 16, Ed will turn 97. He already knows how he wants to celebrate: with a bike ride.
“That’s the perfect way to start the day,” he says with a grin.
