Jackson Township Introduces New E-Bike Safety Ordinance: What You Need to Know

On Thursday, February 28, the Jackson Township Council in New Jersey held a public hearing to discuss and approve a new ordinance aimed at regulating the use of low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles within the township. The measure, which establishes Chapter 432 of the Township Code, was initially introduced on February 11 and was unanimously passed by a 5-0 vote.
Why the Ordinance Was Introduced

Council Vice President Mordechai Burnstein added, “Lots of young adults and teens are out there on e-bikes, we need to make sure they’re safe, they know the rules, and that they follow the rules. We want to make sure everyone is safe on our roads and make sure everyone is aware of, and follows the rules.”
How the Ordinance Defines E-Bikes
The ordinance defines low-speed electric bicycles based on state law, distinguishing between Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes. These classifications help determine the operational rules and safety requirements that apply to each type of e-bike.

Registration Requirement
All low-speed electric bicycles must be registered with the Township Clerk’s Office. While there is no fee for registration, failure to comply will result in fines:
