Rad Power Bikes and California Shop Sued After E-Bike Front Wheel Allegedly Detaches

Last Updated on October 26, 2026 by Kristina

A California e-bike rider has filed a lawsuit against Rad Power Bikes, a bicycle repair shop, and related companies after alleging that his electric bike’s front wheel detached while he was braking, causing serious injuries.

The lawsuit was filed October 9, 2026, in Santa Barbara County Superior Court. It raises two questions: whether the bike’s front wheel-retention system was defective and whether the wheel was properly secured after brake service. Neither allegation has been proven in court.

The case also highlights why wheel security and post-repair inspections matter. EBE’s e-bike maintenance checklist covers practical checks before riding.

These details come from the publicly indexed case listing and reporting by Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.

What Allegedly Happened?

According to the lawsuit, Anatoli Ratsa used his Rad Power e-bike for transportation around Santa Barbara, including commuting to classes at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

In June 2026, he took his bike to Isla Vista Bicycle Boutique because its front brake performance had diminished. The shop reportedly replaced the front brake rotor and charged $30.

On or about June 14, Ratsa was reportedly riding downhill on Veronica Springs Road, approaching a stop sign near Modoc Road. The complaint alleges that when he applied the brakes, the front wheel separated from the fork. Reporting on the complaint says the wheel came to rest about 10 meters away and Ratsa was thrown onto the pavement.

The lawsuit alleges injuries including a fractured right elbow requiring surgical hardware, a head injury, hip and lower-back contusions, lacerations, and scarring. These are the plaintiff’s allegations, not independently established medical findings.

What Does the Lawsuit Allege Against Rad Power Bikes?

The plaintiff alleges problems involving the front wheel-retention system, including the quick-release skewer, fork dropouts, and secondary retention features. The complaint asserts that the arrangement could fail to retain the wheel under foreseeable braking and riding conditions and raises claims concerning manufacture and configuration.

One notable allegation is that the quick-release lever was found fully closed after the crash. A closed lever alone does not prove that a wheel was correctly secured. Proper retention also depends on correct wheel seating, adjustment, clamping force, and component condition. The lever’s reported position does not establish what caused the separation.

The lawsuit does not establish a defect affecting every Rad Power bike. The specific model has not been reliably identified in the reporting reviewed for this article.

Why Is the Bicycle Repair Shop Also Named?

The lawsuit separately alleges that Isla Vista Bicycle Boutique did not properly secure the front wheel after working on the brake system. According to the complaint, the repair involved removing and reinstalling the wheel. The plaintiff alleges problems with installation, seating, tension, adjustment, or securing the quick-release assembly.

Wheel installation is a safety-critical part of brake work, but the fact that a repair happened before a crash does not prove the repair caused it. Evidence about the components, installation, service history, and crash circumstances would be needed to resolve responsibility. The complaint presents allegations against multiple defendants, not findings against them.

Why Are Rad Power’s New Owners Included?

The complaint also names Life Electric Vehicles Holdings Inc. and Rad Life Mobility Inc., companies associated with the Rad Power Bikes business following bankruptcy and an ownership transition.

According to Rad Power Bikes’ published warranty information, the former Rad Power Bikes Inc., now known as New Summit Collective Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 15, 2025. The brand came under new ownership on February 27, 2026.

Rad Life Mobility’s warranty statement describes the asset sale and its position on obligations involving products sold by the former business. Naming the newer companies does not establish successor liability. Those questions depend on the law, the sale arrangements, and evidence in the proceedings.

What Should Rad Power Bikes Owners Do?

This lawsuit alone is not evidence that all Rad Power e-bikes are unsafe or that every owner must stop riding. Still, front wheel security matters on any bicycle.

Check That Both Wheels Are Secure

Before riding, check that your wheels are correctly attached. For quick-release wheels, use your model’s owner’s manual to confirm that the wheel is properly seated and the mechanism correctly adjusted and secured. Merely moving a lever to its closed position is not enough. For thru-axles or other systems, follow the applicable instructions and torque specifications.

If there is unusual wheel movement, an apparently loose axle, or uncertainty about installation, do not ride until a qualified mechanic checks it.

Check the Bike After Brake or Wheel Repairs

After service involving wheel removal, confirm that the wheel is secured, shows no unusual play, and rotates as expected. Make sure the brake lever feels consistent and the brake engages normally. Ask the mechanic whether the axle or wheel-retention system was inspected. If something feels loose or different, arrange an inspection before riding.

Do Not Ignore Weak Brakes

Unusual stopping distances, braking noises, or a spongy lever can have different causes, including worn pads, contamination, or hydraulic issues. EBE explains the possibilities in why your e-bike brakes feel weak.

Suspected wheel looseness is a reason to stop riding, not to take a test ride to see what happens.

Has Rad Power Faced a Similar Lawsuit Before?

Yes, although the earlier case was separate and did not establish a wheel-retention defect. In September 2023, Maryland resident Gary E. Mason filed a lawsuit alleging that the front wheel of a RadRunner detached while braking. It challenged the fork and quick-release skewer design. Rad Power disputed the allegations.

Mason voluntarily dismissed the case without prejudice in December 2023. That dismissal did not determine whether the bicycle was defective. The October 2026 lawsuit involves a different rider and incident, plus allegations about recent bicycle-shop service.

Does This Lawsuit Mean Rad Power Bikes Has Issued a Recall?

No recall or official stop-riding notice specific to the alleged defect in this case was verified during this research. A lawsuit is not a recall, and the reporting does not identify a confirmed defect affecting a particular model or production batch.

Owners with concerns should check current manufacturer notices and Consumer Product Safety Commission recall information for their exact model. If a wheel-retention component is loose or damaged, stop riding until it is professionally inspected.

What Happens Next in the Lawsuit?

The plaintiff seeks a jury trial and damages for alleged injuries and losses. The case is Anatoli Ratsa v. Isla Vista Bicycle Boutique et al., number 26CV06481, in Santa Barbara County Superior Court.

The reporting reviewed does not establish a court finding that any defendant caused the alleged crash. A public response to this particular October 2026 complaint from each defendant could not be verified. The case’s outcome will depend on the evidence and legal proceedings.

My Take

What stands out to me is that the lawsuit raises two different questions: was there a problem with the wheel-retention system, or was there a problem when the wheel was reinstalled after the brake repair? The available information does not establish either explanation.

I would not tell Rad Power owners to stop riding solely because a lawsuit was filed. But I do think the allegations are a useful reminder of why wheel installation matters, especially after repairs. Ask whether the wheels and brakes were checked, understand the retention system on your own bike, and have anything questionable inspected before riding.

How This Story Was Verified

Electric Bike Explorer reviewed the publicly indexed Santa Barbara County case listing, reporting from Bicycle Retailer and Industry News published October 21, 2026 describing the complaint, coverage of earlier Rad Power litigation, and Rad Power’s ownership and maintenance information. The filing date and case number are supported by the case listing; crash details, injuries, alleged defects, and repair practices are attributed to the plaintiff’s complaint through reporting. EBE did not independently examine the complete complaint or inspect the bicycle, and no final finding of liability was verified.
