Police Seize “80 MPH” E-Bike in UK After Dangerous Road Ride

Police in Sunderland, UK, say they’ve confiscated the fastest e-bike they’ve ever seen.
The bike was reported to be capable of hitting speeds as high as 83.2 mph. That’s over five times the legal e-bike speed limit in the UK.
A Dangerous DIY Build
Images released by Northumbria Police show the bike was not a factory model. It started life as a normal mountain bike. Then it was fitted with a powerful hub motor, a large battery mounted inside the frame, and an oversized speed controller strapped to the frame.
Police described the build as “incredibly dangerous.”
What the Law Allows
In the UK, e-bikes are only legal if they meet strict rules:
- Maximum assisted speed: 15.5 mph (25 km/h)
- Pedal-assist only, not throttle-based
- Power limit of 250W
Anything faster becomes classed as a motorcycle or moped. That means it needs insurance, registration, and a license to be ridden legally.
The Rider and the Seizure
Police say they were tipped off after drivers reported seeing the bike in front of a car. When they stopped it, the rider was traveling at 35 mph (56 km/h)—more than double the limit.
An LCD panel on the bike showed a top speed record of 83.2 mph. Police believe that number reflects the “no-load” speed—measured when the wheel spins freely in the air, not while riding on the road. Still, the potential risk was clear.
This bike was one of more than 100 illegal e-bikes and scooters seized by Sunderland police so far this year.
Why It Matters
Modified e-bikes like this one are growing more common. Riders may think they’re just having fun or saving money. But pushing bikes beyond their limits can turn them into unregulated, uninsured machines that put both riders and drivers at risk.
Police across the UK are now warning: if you want to ride fast, get a motorbike license. E-bikes are meant for safer, slower travel.
