Blaupunkt Moves E-Bike Assembly to North Carolina Amid Tariffs and Supply Chain Shifts
Last Updated on September 26, 2025 by Kristina
Blaupunkt, the German brand best known for car audio, is moving part of its e-bike operations to the United States. The company will relocate assembly from Paraguay to Western North Carolina.
The frames will still be built overseas in Malaysia and China. But the final step — putting the bikes together — will now take place in the U.S.
Why It Matters
This is more than just a company moving factories. It signals a bigger shift in how the e-bike industry is thinking about production.
- Tariff pressures: The U.S. recently extended steep import duties on e-bikes and parts. Some are as high as 50%. Assembling in the U.S. helps brands like Blaupunkt cut down on those costs.
- Supply chain resilience: COVID-era shortages exposed how fragile global supply chains can be. By assembling closer to customers, companies can react faster when disruptions hit.
- Market confidence: The U.S. e-bike market is growing fast — imports jumped by more than 70% from 2023 to 2024. A move like this shows brands believe the growth will stick.
Jobs and Local Impact
For North Carolina, this is another boost to its manufacturing base. The region has already attracted auto suppliers, battery plants, and furniture makers. Adding e-bike assembly builds on that momentum.
Blaupunkt hasn’t shared exact job numbers yet. Still, even modest hiring means new opportunities in a sector that’s only going to get bigger.
The Bigger Trend
Blaupunkt isn’t alone. Other bike and e-bike brands are also looking at more local assembly in North America and Europe. It’s part of a pattern: companies want control, flexibility, and shorter shipping times.
If more brands follow, we may see:
- More models available year-round (fewer “sold out” notices).
- Slightly more stable pricing, even if tariffs stay high.
- Better customization for regional markets, since production is closer to home.
My Take
This move feels like a smart bet. The U.S. e-bike market is no longer just “import and sell.” It’s maturing, and companies are planting real roots here.
For riders, the benefits might not show up overnight. Prices probably won’t drop tomorrow. But local assembly means fewer shipping delays, more availability, and, down the road, maybe even bikes tailored for U.S. riders.
For the industry, it’s another sign that e-bikes are not a fad. They’re here to stay — and companies like Blaupunkt are betting big on that future.
? What do you think? Would you pay more for an e-bike assembled in the U.S. if it meant faster shipping and better support?
