Rivian’s New Spin-Off ‘Also’ Aims to Disrupt the E-Bike and Scooter Market
Last Updated on March 27, 2025 by Kristina
Rivian is best known for its rugged electric trucks and SUVs, but now it’s setting its sights on something smaller. The EV maker has officially spun off its micromobility division into a new company called Also, Inc., which will focus on e-bikes, scooters, and other lightweight electric vehicles.
A Shift Toward Smaller, Smarter EVs
The idea for Also didn’t happen overnight. A few years ago, Rivian quietly started exploring micromobility, seeing a growing need for compact, sustainable transportation. The company even filed trademarks in 2022 for electric bikes, scooters, and related components, signaling that something was in the works.
It wasn’t just about entering the market—it was about doing it better. Rivian wanted to apply its advanced EV technology to make smaller electric vehicles that were not only more capable but also more affordable. After years of refining the idea, the company decided it was big enough to stand on its own.
$105M in Funding and a Big Name on Board
With its official launch, Also secured $105 million in investment from Eclipse Ventures to fuel its expansion. While Rivian still holds a “substantial minority stake,” Also will operate independently, though future collaborations aren’t off the table.
RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, is staying involved as Chairman of Also’s board. He’s made it clear that electrifying transportation isn’t just about big vehicles—it’s about offering the right options for different lifestyles. According to him, the new company will introduce innovations that could redefine micromobility.
What’s Coming First?
Details are scarce, but Also’s first product is set to debut later this year. Scaringe gave a vague but intriguing hint: “There’s a seat, and there’s two wheels, there’s a screen, and there’s a few computers and a battery.” Sounds like a high-tech e-bike or scooter with some smart features baked in.
What’s more exciting is the team behind it. Also is made up of around 70 engineers and designers from Apple, Google, Tesla, and Uber. With that level of expertise, the company could push micromobility tech to a whole new level.
Why This Move Makes Sense for Rivian
While Rivian focuses on getting its midsize R2 SUV ready for 2026, its investment in Also shows a bigger-picture strategy. It’s not just about making adventure vehicles anymore—it’s about shaping the future of everyday transportation.
The e-bike and scooter market is booming, and Rivian clearly sees the potential. Whether Also will go head-to-head with brands like VanMoof, Bird, or Lime—or carve out its own niche—remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Rivian isn’t just thinking about the road ahead. It’s thinking about the streets, bike lanes, and sidewalks too.
What do you think? Would you ride an e-bike or scooter from Also, Inc.? Let’s talk in the comments! ?⚡?
