This Tiny Hub Motor Could Be a Game-Changer for Urban E-Bikes
Last Updated on June 25, 2025 by Kristina
Something small just made a big splash at Eurobike 2025. A new ultra-compact hub motor has arrived—and it could seriously shift the future of city e-bikes.
Developed by a powerhouse trio—Moving Magnet Technologies (MMT), Swiss firm Sonceboz, and French software company eBikeLabs—this little motor is built for big things.
Let’s talk specs.
Up to 70 Nm of torque.
Regenerative braking.
A slick 22:1 gear ratio.
And a built-in torque sensor for that buttery-smooth pedaling feel we all love.
Despite all that power, it weighs under 2.5 kg (just 5.5 lbs). That’s incredibly light for a high-torque hub motor. Especially one aimed at the urban scene.
Designed for single-speed e-bikes, it integrates fully with eBikeLabs’ smart software platform, eBikeOS. So what you’re getting isn’t just a motor—it’s a whole connected ecosystem.
What’s inside?
Anti-theft immobilization.
Ride customization.
Real-time diagnostics.
Regenerative braking.
All in a sleek, compact unit that disappears into the bike’s form.
Sonceboz, known for zero-defect manufacturing in the automotive world, is handling production. Swiss precision. Automated processes. Industrial muscle. They’ve got it covered.
The motor is currently in B-sample testing with a premium brand (name still under wraps). But if all goes to plan, it could hit the market by early 2027.

Damien Wittwer from Sonceboz summed it up perfectly:
“We don’t just build motors—we empower you to stand out in a market that demands smarter, quieter, more integrated urban mobility.”
And they’re not just talking. MMT brings the core motor design. Sonceboz brings production firepower. eBikeLabs delivers the brains—eBikeOS, with theft alerts, tracking, and tuning baked in from day one.
I’ve tested eBikeOS before—briefly, at Micromobility Europe. It worked brilliantly. Responsive. Smart. Seamless.
This isn’t eBikeLabs’ first move into premium tech. Their software already runs on the Virvolt 2000 motor in Shwette’s cargo bikes. They’ve also partnered with brands like Cowboy and Vefaa.
But this is different.
This is a full-stack solution—hardware and software developed together, not patched together after the fact. That kind of tight integration is rare.
And it matters.
If the final product lives up to the promise, this could be one of the most important components in the next generation of urban e-bikes.
Lightweight. Smart. Secure. Powerful.
This motor doesn’t scream for attention.
But it might just quietly revolutionize how city e-bikes are built—and ridden.
If you’re at Eurobike this week, you can check it out yourself:
- Hall 8, Booth I21 (with Sonceboz)
- Hall 12.1, Booth A21 (with eBikeLabs)
Worth a look. Maybe even a second one.
