SONDORS Is Back: Can the E-Bike Brand Regain Trust After Its Collapse?
Last Updated on June 4, 2025 by Kristina
In 2023, SONDORS filed for bankruptcy. The once-popular electric bike company had fallen hard after years of hype, delays, and financial troubles. Now, in a surprising twist, founder Storm Sondors is back—and so is the brand.
The company is taking pre-orders for a new off-road electric motorbike called the Meta AT. It’s a bold move for a brand that left many customers empty-handed just over a year ago.
A Quick History of SONDORS
SONDORS started strong in 2015. Its $500 fat tire e-bike made headlines for being one of the cheapest electric bikes on the market. The bike was sold through a crowdfunding campaign. Many thought it was a scam when delivery delays piled up. But eventually, the bikes did arrive—just not quite as advertised.
For nearly a decade, the company followed a similar pattern. Big promises. Low prices. Delays. Mixed reviews. But in the end, SONDORS usually delivered. That changed in 2021.
The company tried to go bigger with a lightweight electric motorcycle called the Metacycle. It looked sleek and futuristic. But production problems slowed deliveries. Only about 2,000 bikes were shipped—far fewer than expected. Eventually, shipments stopped altogether.
Behind the scenes, financial issues were mounting. Expansion into big box stores may have squeezed profits even further. By 2023, SONDORS couldn’t pay its suppliers. The company went into receivership.
The Meta AT: A New Beginning?
Now, the original founder says he has bought the company back and is starting over. The new bike, the Meta AT, targets the off-road market. It’s designed to compete with electric dirt bikes like Sur Ron and Talaria.
Specs include:
- 4,000W peak motor
- Top speed: 50 mph (80 km/h)
- Range: up to 60 miles (96 km)
- 2.5 kWh battery
- Knobby tires and full suspension for trail riding
The Meta AT is not street-legal, but SONDORS says a “Street Legal Kit” will be available. It’s unclear if that will meet road requirements in most areas. The company advises riders to check local laws.

A Familiar Playbook
Pre-orders are open now through Indiegogo. The MSRP is $4,200, but early buyers can lock one in for $2,299. The catch? Full payment is required upfront, long before production or delivery.
This is a familiar strategy for SONDORS. It worked before—until it didn’t.
Trust Issues Remain
Not everyone is excited. Many customers still haven’t received their Metacycles. Hundreds of bikes are said to be sitting in a Chinese warehouse due to a contract dispute between SONDORS and its former factory.
Reports say the factory built bikes using money from a deposit for a future order. But when SONDORS ran out of funds and failed to pay the remaining balance, the factory refused to release the completed bikes. SONDORS says it paid over $11 million to the factory. The factory says the money wasn’t for those specific bikes.
The disagreement remains unresolved.
Can SONDORS Win People Back?
Despite the backlash, the company claims over 7,400 people have reserved the new Meta AT through private channels. The public Indiegogo page shows far fewer backers—around 36 as of now—but SONDORS says reservations are being processed in stages.
The Meta AT is lighter, simpler, and less expensive than the Metacycle. That may make it easier to build and ship. But trust is another matter.
Some potential buyers are hopeful. Others are skeptical. Many are still angry.
Time will tell if SONDORS can deliver this time—and whether customers are willing to give the company another chance.
