Boston, Massachusetts E-Bike Voucher Applications Open Through August 3

Current status – July 26, 2026: The City of Boston, Massachusetts, is accepting applications for its latest e-bike voucher round through August 3, 2026, at noon. Eligible Boston residents can apply for up to $1,200 toward a standard e-bike or up to $1,500 toward a cargo e-bike.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS – July 26, 2026: Applications for the Boston E-Bikes Incentive Program opened July 20 at 9 a.m. The open round is for qualifying residents seeking standard or cargo e-bikes. The Boston, Massachusetts program uses randomized selection rather than a first-come, first-served process. Applying early does not improve a resident’s odds, but the online application must be submitted before the August 3 deadline.

The City says it has provided 1,167 vouchers since the program began. This grant-funded pilot currently has no additional application rounds planned after the open round, although Boston could announce another opportunity if new funding becomes available.

How Much Are the Boston E-Bike Vouchers?

Every person who receives an e-bike voucher also receives a separate $150 safety-equipment voucher.

If the selected e-bike costs more than the voucher, the recipient must pay the remaining balance. If the bike costs less, the unused amount is returned to the program. It cannot be received as cash, store credit or a gift card.

Taxes, transportation charges, assembly fees and other in-store expenses are not covered by the e-bike voucher.

Who Qualifies in Boston, Massachusetts?

An applicant must live in the City of Boston and belong to at least one of these groups:

• A resident age 60 or older
• An adult age 18 or older with a chronic or permanent disability
• An income-eligible adult age 18 or older whose household income is at or below 40% of Area Median Income

A senior or adult with a qualifying disability does not have to meet the income limit to qualify for a base voucher. Income eligibility determines whether the applicant qualifies for the larger standard or cargo e-bike voucher.

The Open Round Does Not Include Adaptive E-Bikes

The application open through August 3 is the general application for standard and cargo e-bikes.

Boston’s separate rolling application for adaptive e-bikes, handcycles, recumbents, tandems and powered handcycle wheelchair attachments is currently closed. Residents seeking adaptive equipment should not use the general application unless they are applying for a standard or cargo e-bike.

How Boston’s Random Selection Process Works

The program is not first come, first served. An eligible resident who applies near the deadline has the same chance in the randomized selection as someone who applied on the opening day.

If You Are Selected

Selected applicants will be notified by email and will have 14 days to claim the voucher opportunity. They must answer additional questions and upload documents verifying their identity, Boston address and applicable eligibility category.

The program administrator says supporting documents will generally be reviewed within 10 business days.

If You Are Not Selected

Applicants who are not selected will be notified by email and placed on a waitlist. A waitlisted applicant may be contacted if another selected resident does not complete the process or if additional voucher funding becomes available.

Documents Selected Applicants Will Need

Every selected applicant must submit a government-issued ID and proof of a City of Boston address.

Accepted identification includes:

• A U.S. or internationally issued passport
• A valid permanent resident card
• A valid driver’s license
• A state-issued identification card

Examples of acceptable proof of address include:

• A utility, credit-card, medical or hospital bill
• A printed bank statement
• A recent pay stub
• Mail from a government agency or court
• A current homeowners, renters or motor-vehicle insurance policy
• A mortgage, lease or rental agreement
• A motor-vehicle registration
• A school transcript or report card
• A qualifying letter from a homeless shelter or service agency

Most address documents must be dated within one year of the application. Additional proof is required for applicants qualifying through income or disability status.

Which E-Bikes Qualify for a Boston Voucher?

The voucher must be used for a new qualifying e-bike purchased from a participating retailer.

Eligible standard and cargo e-bikes must generally:

• Have two or three wheels and fully operable pedals
• Have a power rating of 750W or less under the City’s program rules
• Meet UL 2849 and/or EN 15194 standards
• Include at least a 1-year warranty on electrical components
• Qualify as a Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike
• Be purchased new through a participating bike shop

Additional Cargo E-Bike Requirements

A qualifying cargo e-bike must be designed to carry passengers, heavy loads or bulky cargo beyond what a conventional bicycle normally carries.

Boston requires an extended frame and a published cargo-carrying capacity of at least 100 lb.

Applicants should choose their voucher category carefully. A cargo e-bike voucher cannot later be used for a standard e-bike, and a standard e-bike voucher cannot be converted into a cargo voucher.

What the $150 Safety-Equipment Voucher Covers

Every approved e-bike voucher recipient receives a separate $150 voucher for eligible safety and bicycle equipment.

Approved purchases can include:

• Helmets
• Locks
• Bicycle lights
• Air pumps
• High-visibility or reflective gear
• Bells and mirrors
• Rear racks
• Phone and water-bottle holders
• Child bicycle seats that safely attach to the purchased e-bike
• A vehicle rack capable of carrying the purchased e-bike

The safety-equipment voucher can be used only once, so all items purchased with it must be included in the same transaction. It cannot be applied to the e-bike, taxes, transportation charges or other in-store expenses.

Round 4 Vouchers Are Valid for 45 Days

The current Boston program page states that Round 4 recipients will have 45 days after receiving their e-bike and safety-equipment vouchers by email to redeem them at participating retailers.

The two vouchers do not have to be redeemed at the same shop or on the same day. However, each voucher has a unique code and can be redeemed only once.

Applicants should follow the expiration date printed in their approval documents. An older program FAQ contains a different redemption period, but the current Round 4 instructions specify 45 days.

Do Not Buy an E-Bike Before Receiving a Voucher

Boston does not provide retroactive reimbursement.

An e-bike or safety item purchased before the voucher is issued cannot later be submitted for a refund. Applicants should wait until they have been selected, approved and issued their voucher before completing a purchase.

Where Can Boston Vouchers Be Used?

Vouchers can be redeemed only at participating bike retailers approved and trained by the Boston program. The official program page lists participating shops in Boston and surrounding Massachusetts communities.

Recipients must present valid government-issued identification when redeeming a voucher.

Participating retailers must also provide 90 days of free tune-up labor for e-bikes sold through the program at their shop. Covered work can include brake and derailleur adjustments, tire inflation, flat repair, wheel truing, chain lubrication, headset adjustment and brake bleeding.

Replacement parts are not included in the free service requirement.

In-Person Application Help in Boston, Massachusetts

The City will provide drop-in assistance on the final application day:

Massachusetts E-Bike Laws Still Apply

Receiving a Boston voucher does not exempt the rider from Massachusetts or local riding laws.

Owners must still follow applicable rules governing road access, shared-use paths, sidewalks, helmets, equipment and local restrictions. Before selecting a bike, residents should review the current Massachusetts e-bike laws and riding rules.

My Take

This is a meaningful opportunity for eligible Boston, Massachusetts residents. The larger income-based vouchers could cover a substantial portion of a practical commuter or cargo e-bike, and the additional safety-equipment voucher helps with essential items such as a helmet, lock and lights.

The randomized process means applicants do not need to rush through the form. The better approach is to submit accurate information before noon on August 3 and begin gathering the documents that will be required if selected.

My biggest caution is not to purchase a bike in advance. The voucher cannot be applied retroactively, and the bike must meet Boston’s eligibility rules and be purchased from a participating retailer.
