Minneapolis Embraces Year-Round E-Bikes and Scooters
Last Updated on April 12, 2025 by Kristina
Big news for Minneapolis: getting around the city just got a lot easier, no matter the season. In a bold move to expand transportation choices, Minneapolis has kicked off a year-round shared e-bike and scooter program. Whether you’re a local looking to skip traffic or a visitor exploring the city, this is a game-changer.
Two familiar names in micromobility — Lime and Spin — are leading the charge. In past years, their fleets disappeared as winter rolled in, only returning in the spring. But this time, they’re here to stay. Well, mostly. “Their license actually extends through the winter,” explained Dillon Fried, senior project manager at Minneapolis Public Works. “If they still find it worth it, they’re going to be authorized to keep their vehicles out throughout the winter, as long as there’s not an excessive amount of snow and ice buildup.”
This expansion means a total of 2,000 e-bikes and 2,000 scooters will hit the streets — that’s 1,000 of each from both Lime and Spin. Riders can choose between Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes and Class 2 models, giving people plenty of flexibility depending on their ride style and needs.
What really stands out about this program is its commitment to accessibility. Minneapolis is making sure these rides reach every corner of the city. At least 30% of the scooters will be placed in equity distribution areas, focusing on neighborhoods in North and South Minneapolis. Downtown will see no more than 40%, leaving room for the rest to spread across other communities. It’s a smart move to balance availability and make sure everyone has a shot at convenient, sustainable transportation.
“If you don’t own your bike, or if you’re somewhere where you don’t have your bike around, and you want to take a trip on an e-bike or scooter that’s relatively affordable, it’s a great option to use micromobility,” Fried shared. And it seems people are already embracing it. In 2024 alone, the city logged an impressive 1.25 million rides — beating pre-pandemic numbers by a solid 200,000 trips.
With year-round access and a focus on equity, Minneapolis is turning everyday commutes into a smoother, greener experience. It’s exciting to see a city not just follow trends, but push them forward.
What do you think about riding e-bikes and scooters through the winter? Would you brave the cold for a faster, greener commute? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! And if you’ve tried the new Minneapolis program, share your experience — we’d love to hear from you!
