Company Responds to Columbus, Ohio’s New E-Bike Provider

A few weeks ago, the City of Columbus, Ohio, made a significant change in its micro-mobility landscape, announcing plans to phase out its current fleet of e-bikes and e-scooters, which includes providers Lime, Spin, and CoGo. In their place, a new fleet from the company Veo will be introduced, bringing a broader range of options for riders.

However, one company isn’t happy with the decision. E-scooter provider Lime has voiced its disappointment about leaving Columbus. In a statement to NBC4, Lime expressed concern over the transition, hinting at unresolved issues related to e-scooter usage and parking.

Columbus City Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla, however, is optimistic about the change and is excited for the future with Veo. Veo’s fleet will offer a more diverse selection of devices, including pedal bikes, e-bikes, and sit-down scooters. Barroso de Padilla emphasized the importance of meeting the needs of all residents, regardless of age or mobility challenges. “The time was now for us to really think about the needs of all of our residents…and give the best possible options to them,” she said.

A key reason for choosing Veo over the existing providers is the company’s commitment to eliminating the issue of dockless scooters cluttering sidewalks and blocking ADA ramps. Under Veo’s plan, scooters will need to be returned to designated charging docks, addressing a frequent complaint with the current system.

Lime, however, challenged the city’s reasoning, stating in its statement, “We understand that new operators have promised that this decision will lead to an immediate fix to all problems associated with riding and parking e-scooters, something we do not believe to be true. Lime asks for the city to be clear-eyed about evaluating whether or not that proves true and if not, we hope for the chance to return.”

Despite Lime’s objections, Barroso de Padilla remains confident in the city’s decision. She noted that Veo’s single-provider model would offer improved customer service and a more comprehensive range of micro-mobility options for residents. “We went with one company because it gave us the ability to have better customer service, it gave us the ability to have more micro-mobility options for our residents, and that’s why the time was now,” she explained.

While Lime’s statement hints at a desire to return to Columbus in the future, the company made it clear that it doesn’t plan to step aside quietly. “We would be grateful for the opportunity to work with the city and determine a way to come back,” Lime stated, adding, “We don’t want to let down our hundreds of thousands of riders here, who made us the provider with the most rides in the city.”

Barroso de Padilla, however, is confident that the transition to Veo will be smooth and that residents will appreciate the wider variety of devices. She is working to ensure that there is no gap in service during the switch-over, which is expected to take place around March.

As the city moves forward, it will be interesting to see how this shift in providers impacts the local micro-mobility landscape in Columbus, Ohio, and whether Veo will meet the expectations set by the city and its residents.

What do you think of the City of Columbus’ switch to Veo for e-bikes and e-scooters? Will this new fleet improve the city’s micro-mobility options, or do you think Lime still has a place in the market? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
